Blindspot - Deductions

Previously on Blindspot

So the aim of this post is to try and recap the events of the first 2 seasons of the insanely twisty show Blindspot. Once that’s done we will launch into recapping and reviewing the third season. We are also going to be live tweeting the show for the UK, every Monday night at 10pm so make sure you join us for that!

Season 1

So our series began with a bag dumped in the middle of Times Square bearing a note that said “Call the FBI”. A bomb disposal squad was called and the area evacuated but what was in the bag was far more complicated than any bomb. The bag opened and a woman emerged.

She had no memories, not even of her own name, and almost every inch of her body was covered in tattoos. Like, everything but her face!

Much of the first season was concerned with the FBI team, led by Special Agent Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton – 300: Rise of an Empire), trying to find out who Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander – Thor) really was. This involved deciphering the clues hidden in the tattoos all over Jane’s body, and following where they led.

Jane was a total mystery. She had serious skills with languages, fighting and guns, but couldn’t remember where they came from. At least not at first. When she began to remember she kept things about her past hidden, leading to many trust issues within the team. Unsurprisingly given that her returned memories seems to make her part of some seriously sketchy goings-on. At the end of Season 1 things came to a head and after some serious conflict Jane was arrested.

Director Mayfair

Played by Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Without A Trace), Director Mayfair was an important part of season 1.

One of the tattoos on Jane’s body was an FBI file number, which lead to some shady dealings that Director Mayfair had been involved in. While Jane was working with her fiance Oscar, he had her replace certain items, such as a pen, and a GPS chip. These were used to frame Mayfair for murder, and install Weller as director of the New York Office of the FBI.

No wasted characters

The great thing about Blindspot is that there is so much going on with the other characters. No-one feels like a flat, 2D support role. Tasha Zapata (Audrey Esparza), Edgar Read (Rob Brown) and Patterson (Ashley Johnson) all have their own detailed storylines playing out and interweaving through season 1.

Tasha’s gambling, Reade’s possible abuse and Patterson’s relationship with David all had far-reaching implications. Not just personally, but also on how they worked as part of the team to solve the tattoos.

Even the smaller players made huge contributions to the show. One such character, dark web super villain Rich Dot Com (Ennis Esmer) proved so popular in season 1 that he returned for a handful of season 2 episodes and it was announced at NYCC this year that he’d be joining the cast as a semi-regular for season 3!

Shipping…

Did I mention pretty much the second Weller and Jane looked at each other I leapt aboard the good ship Jeller and have been sailing ever since?

I also have a soft spot for Reade and Zapata, but I’m still not sure if I want them together or just as brOTP.

Season 2

The second season debuted with Jane being held in some super secret CIA Blacksite being tortured. That didn’t last long though. She was soon out and back with the team as the tattoos began leading them in a super sinister direction. We were introduced to Sandstorm, run by Jane’s adopted mother Shepherd (Michelle Hurd). And we also met Jane’s brother Roman (her real name is Remy) played by Agents of SHIELD‘s Luke Mitchell. He had a pretty badass introduction, saving Jane from some cops in the pouring rain…

Those biceps… PHEW!

Now if you think you’ve seen dysfunctional families before, prepare yourselves. We learned about Remy and Roman’s childhood. Their parents were murdered and they were raised in a South African orphanage before they were adopted by Shepherd. I’m not sure what messed him up the most to be quite honest, I mean…

(pssst… I think Jane’s bunny is Weller)

Shepherd raised them to be soldiers in her private cuckoo-for-cocopuffs-militia devoted to resetting the US in a bid to wipe out corruption. Jane was a double agent for a time, working withing Sandstorm to try and convert Roman to the good guy side. It sort of worked too, Shepherd wanted him to shoot Jane, but he couldn’t do it and shot their mother instead. Jane used the memory wipe agent that had been used on her and reset his brain. She lied and said Shepherd had done it, and brought Roman over to the FBI. He worked with the team for a while, recalling parts of Sandstorm’s plan, and gained their trust. Even going out into the field on missions with them when necessary. Eventually though, the drugs wore off and Roman remembered what Jane had done to him.

Follow the COGS

This sent Roman back to mummy dearest and the two escalated their bonkers plans to stop corruption. It was revealed that the plan was to remove the current corrupt heads of all the major organisations in government via the tattoos. Their replacements were all approved by Sandstorm. These included Kurt as head of the FBI and Keaton in charge of the CIA. Thankfully Weller and Keaton got out of the creepy bunker they’d been dragged to and, with the help of the rest of the team, foiled Shepherd’s plans.

Borden’s Betrayal

So Patterson and the team’s psychiatrist Robert Borden (Ukweli Roach) had the cutest relationship.

Right up until she worked out HE was the Sandstorm mole inside the New York Office and he shot her. Once revealed he fled back to Shepherd and Sandstorm, and we found out he was far more than just a mole. Borden was a key player in Sandstorm, being on board right from the start after his wife was killed in a US airstrike.

Poor Patterson has the worst luck in relationships. David was killed in s1 for getting too into the tattoo cases. Borden was a double-dealing scumbag. Let’s hope maybe in S3 she finds someone better!

2 years later

Season 2 finished in suitably mad Blindspot fashion. We leapt 2 years into the future, to Jane having run away to Nepal where she was living in isolation. Kurt tracked her down and we found out that some time in the previous two years they had gotten married and then she had left without explanation. He produced a box which was keyed to only open with her DNA. Inside was a weird metallic disc that when they both held, showed a mirror image of the bird tattoo on her neck. When Kurt placed the disc against the tattoo… well…this happened!

He also informed her that Tasha, Patterson and Reade were missing, presumed kidnapped, and that he needed her back to help him find them…

Looking forward

So what can we expect in season 3? Hopefully some information on what happened during those two years between Weller and Jane hooking up in his apartment and Kurt finding his WIFE in Nepal. Sorry, but I am never getting over the fact they got married. What have the team been up to? What nefarious plans has Roman no doubt got up his sleeve? Oh, and lots more Rich Dot Com please!
