Outlander review: ‘The Wedding’

Well the kilt has finally and literally dropped, and all I can say is wow!

wedding

The sexual tension had been building and building between Claire and Jamie, for six episodes, and the conflict of Claire wanting to let go and be with Jamie and be happy has been wavering back and forth, forth and back and everything in between.

This is one of the most important events in the story as it changes everything for Claire and also ignites the flame of passion between her and Jamie that will see things steaming up quite nicely for the rest of the season.

I’ll be honest when I say that I was a little worried as to how Ron Moore was going to approach the whole “consummation” scene. Author of the Outlander series, Diana Gabaldon, wrote a pretty steamy and satisfying scene that set the bar pretty high for  Moore.

Personally, I couldn’t imagine being either of side if camera and having to capture such an intimate scene or event to be the actors who “have to get it on” in front of God knows how many folks who are hanging out on set.

While Moore only followed a skeleton of the original lovemaking scene from the books, he, his writers along with actors,  Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe get top marks for their totally hot and intense scenes of episode seven.

The episode begins with the Claire and Jamie finishing their matrimonial kiss at the wedding and then the retreating to their wedding chamber at a local inn. outlander-wedding

Clearly freaked out by the day’s events, Claire is very apprehensive about what is about to go down a.k.a. the consummation, and postpones the evening’s inevitable events by asking Jamie to tell her about his family.  Jamie, being the good guy he is, honors her plan of diversion by giving her a thorough history of his family.

It then comes time to “get down to business” and a quick business it is with a seemingly awkward coupling between the two.

I think I speak for the every fan of  the book  when I say I sincerely hoped that this awkward love scene wasn’t all Moore had in store for viewers for the big wedding night as the book clearly gave us a lot more to enjoy {coughs} 50 pages of more {coughs}.

Thank goodness he didn’t and after a few flashbacks of the wedding day, viewers enjoyed a nice show of amour between the two that included a string of pearls that I am sure every woman who tuned in last night now wants a pair of.

OUT_107-20140716-ND_0718.jpgSpeaking of flashbacks, I was thrilled that as our new couple was getting to know each other and we had the flashbacks we saw the wedding through Jame’s eyes. Seeing him in his Fraser colors, waiting for his bride, the way he spoke as he was telling the tale, and seeing how he saw Claire, took my breath away. The little touches, that he had a key formed into a ring for Claire, making sure she had a real wedding gown, and more importantly having a real church wedding, “I only want to get married once,” was amazing, and added to the realness, and quality of the character. I can describe and tell you the tale of the wedding and the wedding night, but alas I am not the author of the book, and I cannot even begin to do it the proper justice. Just watch the episode. It’s a must see.

“A Highlander in full regalia is an impressive sight — any Highlander, no matter how old, ill-favored, or crabbed in appearance. A tall, straight-bodied and by no means ill-favored young Highlander at close range is breathtaking.”

Back to the wedding night, cause let’s be honest, that’s what we honestly wanted. The wedding and the wedding night was a game changer. It was hot, sensual, erotic and beautiful.

What really made the loves scenes work, though,  was hands down the chemistry between Heughan and Balfe.

I personally think you would have to be pretty trusting and comfortable with your fellow acting partner to carry out such scenes that not only require physical intensity but also emotional, and without a doubt Balfe and Heughan nailed it.

It was hot, steamy, and totally Outlander.

We end with Claire staring at both wedding rings and contemplating where (or what century) her future lies. My vote goes to the red-headed Scot in the 18th century.

So many little details to cover in this episode. Dougal being nice, and giving into Jamie’s three demands for the wedding to happen, and then hitting on Claire when she looks for more whiskey. Will Claire tell her husband? How will she tell him that his uncle, the war chief has hit on her once, kissed her in a dark alley. When or if Claire will tell Jamie about her past. Can he be trusted about things like that? Will the Laird understand that some of the money collected in either taxes, or to fund the Jacobite cause went to fund the wedding of his nephew to the Sassenach?

Please say it ain’t so that there is only one final episode left. I can’t believe we have to wait months for the conclusion to the season, but I know it will all be worth while and keep us coming back for more!
