THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3 OF OUTER BANKS. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK IF YOU ARE NOT UP TO DATE.

Outer Banks season 3 picks up with the Pogues stranded on a deserted island, for a brief moment, seems like an idyllic home. Officially deemed “Poguelandia,” the island’s newest residents spend their days fishing, swimming, and reveling in the carefree lifestyle of their temporary dwelling. But things quickly go south for the group, when they find themselves once again caught up in a race for the treasure, quite literally running for their lives.

They’re broke and far from home, they can’t trust anyone, Ward (Charles Esten) and Rafe (Drew Starkey) are hungry for revenge, and a ruthless Caribbean Don will stop at nothing to find the bounty. Was the treasure ever within their reach? Or was it all a trap to stop them once and for all? Either way, it’s the Pogues against the world – and the only way out is together.

New Villain

We got a new villain this session, Carlos Singh (Andy McQueen). Who is seeking the city of gold, El Dorado. The biggest treasure hunt we’ve ever had. There was a great connection between the story of El Dorado and that of The Royal Merchant gold from season one and the gold cross from season two by the writers. As far as villains go, Carlos Singh is my favorite, he even has his own music that plays every time. Additionally, he never conceals his end goal or hides it. Besides being everywhere at once, he has poison darts as well!

Can’t forget that Rafe slowly turning into the villain we all know he could be. It’s been interesting over the seasons watching Rafe become more and more unhinged. I have been waiting for the moment he would turn on Ward.

The Chase to El Dorado

Whenever there is a treasure, you can be sure the pogues will try to find it. Were we really thinking we’d seen the last of The Royal Merchant? First, it was the gold, then it was the golden cross and now it has a connection with El Dorado. Big John and John B (Chase Stokes) are chasing down the clues to lead them to the treasure of the city of gold. While at the same time, after learning that they have another chance at obtaining the Golden Cross, Sarah (Madelyn Cline), Kiara, Cleo, JJ (Rudy Pankow), and Pope set out to chase after it. However, their plan failed when they found out that Rafe had already stolen it.

“Make yourself pure of heart. Pure of mind.”

Pope (Jonathan Daviss) was the only one to realize that all three treasures had a connection to Denmark Tanny. The pogues decided to go to South America to rescue Big John and find the city of gold. However, things didn’t go as planned. After a few unexpected turns, John B and Sarah eventually found the city of gold. It wasn’t what I expected, but it was still covered in gold. The pogues finally got their treasure.

Overall Thoughts

The Pogues never have a dull moment based on their two previous seasons. No plan ever goes according to plan. There have been some interesting team-ups this season that I definitely didn’t have on my Outer Banks bingo card; for instance, Rafe and Kiara working together to escape Singh, and Topper (Austin North) helping the pogues steal the “fake” gold cross.

Cleo (Carlacia Grant) is an amazing addition to the group of pogues. She brings a lot of intelligence and strength to the team, and it’s great to see her call out the group when they’re doing something foolish. Her relationship with the Heywards is also a real highlight, and it’s clear that she’s a great asset to the team. Plus, it’s always nice to have a bit of JJ’s chaotic energy around.

Sometimes I felt like the season was taking too long, like they were trying to make it last 10 episodes when it could have been shorter or they could have explored other areas. For example, they could have shown us the first few days when they realized they were stuck on the island. This season has been different in terms of the group dynamic, since they’ve split up so often. It’s been interesting to see how the pogues handled it.

Predictions for Season 4?

There are so many storylines that can occur now that the pogues are known as treasure hunters. However, I’m most excited about the captain’s log for Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard. The Royal Merchant was insane, but Blackbeard’s is even crazier. There’s no doubt the pogues will be in over their heads. It will be interesting to see if Rafe still holds a grudge against the pogues after Ward’s death in South America. As well as seeing if he will pursue Blackbeard’s treasure. There will be a lot to look forward to in Season 4.

Hi, I'm Amy. I was born into the fandom life and was taught all its magical ways.
