The Originals – Gonna Set Your Flag on Fire recap

The Originals

Sorry I’m so late – had some technical issues that prevented me from posting. All better now. Hope you enjoyed the lovely Joseph Morgan Hottie of the Week courtesy of the lovely Jenn and that it’s kept you going.

Right, so, where were we? Ah yes, mid-season premiere time!

Previously on The Originals – Esther came back with a plan to ‘fix’ her children, Klaus wooed Kol over to his side (but for how long), Finn completely lost his marbles, Hayley figured out a way to free her wolves from being enslaved to the witches by marrying Jackson (Elijah’s response to that was obviously to sleep with her), Bex took Esther’s deal as a way to take her mad mother down but Kol being the self-serving toad he is double-crossed her and dumped her into the body of a mad witch in a mental asylum but not before she slipped vamp blood to Esther who is now in transition after being stabbed in the neck by Klaus.

All up to date? Excellent. Let’s get on with it!

Hayley and Hope (okay mostly Hayley) share a tender moment with Elijah at the safehouse in Arkansas while Klaus talks about his family; Elijah’s secrets, Kol’s self-interest, Finn’s lack of self worth, fierce Rebekah (honestly, can we take a moment to just look at how Klaus has come around from banishing his sister for calling their father down on them to her being the only person he trusts with Hope to him offering himself in her stead for Esther’s body-jump nonsense? That’s character development right there) and himself – his mother’s greatest shame, and the fact his mother is now in transition. He’s been telling all of this to Cami as they arrive at the safehouse, he’s brought her to meet Hope (OMG Klaus are you mental? Your batshit crazy brother has already declared that he’s gunning for her and you bring her to meet the daughter you want to keep safe above all things…). Klaus sets out his plan – he’s going to head back to NOLA with Hayley to deal with Finn while Cami babysits Hope and tries to headshrink Elijah (“a single violent outburst at a filthy roadside cafe and one never hears the end of it” quips Elijah a little worryingly). Rebekah should be in her new body and on the way by now, Klaus tells them to expect her to arrive shortly for Hope but she’s actually tied to a bed being force-fed medication by some hulking dude with scars on his face in a witch mental asylum.

Finn is cooking up something magical to find Esther while daddy dearest bonds with him over how vile his siblings are and how together they will destroy them.

In NOLA Hayley meets Jackson and he informs her that their marriage won’t be a simple affair – there are rituals to go through first. Hayley seems apprehensive and Jackson is so besotted he seems willing to do anything. Their little moment is interrupted by the arrival of Aiden and a bunch of werewolves that Hayley has invited over to talk to Marcel and his vamps who arrive from the opposite direction.

Rebekah wakes up and spits out the pills the scary dude gave her and hides them under her pillow as cassie, former host to Esther shows up, Cassie gives her the 411 on the Fauline Cottage and the zero chance of escape while still breathing.

Kol has moved into the compound and Klaus brings him a bottle of absinthe as a moving in gift. Sadly the newly reunited brothers don’t get to share it as Finn shows up and smashes it. When Klaus refuses to reveal Esther’s location to Finn he storms out. Down in the courtyard the truce talks between the vamps and wolves are underway until Finn intervenes and casts a spell which magically imprisons both factions inside the compound before he walks off. Kol and Klaus are also locked in with them which Klaus says Kol needs to fix, after all he is mortal and might prove rather tempting if the vampires get hungry.

Marcel has Jaiden hunting for a way out and Gia in charge of making sure the vamps don’t start anything with the wolves while he goes and opens some crates of booze to share around and hopefully use to get everyone to blow off some steam without killing each other.

Elijah calls Rebekah for the umpteenth time but gets no answer while Cami finds a bottle of scotch. Elijah is sceptical, thinks she wants him to get drunk and talk about his feelings but all she wants is to drink and play boardgames to forget about her own problems. She opens the Trivial Pursuit box, pulls out a question and asks Elijah, What was Don Quixote’s horse called. He refuses to answer so instead she asks him about Hayley. Rocinante he quickly replies while reaching for a drink for himself.

At the compound Klaus is teasing Hayley about her time with Elijah and the fact the finally hooked up “this family’s weird enough already” she replies…to the immortal half-werewolf who knocked her up – yeah, no kidding!! She looks down at Jackson and Klaus recognises what she is thinking – she’s wondering if she should tell him the truth about her feelings for Elijah – and tells her that the strongest relationships are not built on love but on merciful lies.

In the witchy nuthouse Cassie gives Bex a tour and tells her that Klaus is responsible for the place after he imprisoned Astrid and Mary-Alice there. Since then the coven has used it as a place to put witches broken by magic. Bex asks about the scarred dudes and Cassie tells her they call themselves the Kindred (and you know with a name like that they are probably not interested in fluffy bunnies and kittens) and they are heavy into dark magic; necromancy, immortality spells (see, no bunnies) and that they have appointed themselves in charge. Bex notices two inmates playing with some letter tiles and suggests to Cassie that they send a distress signal.

Davina arrives at the compound to help Kol try and break the barrier spell but they can’t, Davina suggests it’s because Finn is channelling a dark object but it’s far better than that – remember how he said he could use Mikael’s strength to fight his siblings? Yup – daddy dearest is powering the barrier spell. It’s official – Finn you are completely off the reservation!

At the safehouse Elijah is showing off a bit, answering every question Cami throws at him, she refuses to believe that he just happens to know who rode a particular Kentucky Derby winner (really, he’s over a thousand years old, that’s a lot of time to pick up useless trivia) and in her mock outrage she bumps into him and spills his drink (Cami is a sloppy drunk). He begins compulsively rubbing at the mark on his shirt sleeve and when she reaches out to stop him he grabs her hand. He’s interrupted by a phone call from what should be Rebekah but very definitely isn’t. Klaus is less than thrilled to hear about this turn of events and even less pleased when Kol appears and asks if everything is okay. Klaus questions him on the progress with dropping the barrier, Kol says that they need certain things from the lisee and the only way to get Finn out of there is to give up Esther’s location.

Hayley decides that merciful lies are not her thing and comes clean to Jackson about Elijah. Jackson is upset and asks if she is in love with Elijah but he already knows she is.

Jaiden get some alone time but Aiden is uncomfortable – he hasn’t told the wolves about his boyfriend yet. Suddenly Josh gets hungry and Aiden starts looking mighty tasty (okay he does anyway but you know what I mean – tasty to a vamp). Josh pushes him away and goes to find Marcel. Finn is working more mojo and it’s making all the vamps hungry. Realising he is being out-manouevred Klaus calls Finn to make a deal. Finn has a rant which Klaus giggles through and pretends not to hear but his humour wanes when Finn says that if the vamps start to feed they won’t be able to stop. Klaus offer’s Esther for their freedom, Finn says if Esther is unharmed he will consider it. Klaus tells him where to find her.

Back in the loony bin Bex and Cassie cast a spell to send an SOS to (presumably) Klaus but are interrupted by one of the Kindred telling them it’s time to eat. The letter tiles they were using to try and send the message scatter across the floor as they leave.

At the compound things start heating up, Kol and Davina have a plan that will deactivate all magic in the area for one minute but that includes the vamps’ daylight rings so they still won’t be able to leave.

Elijah has another red door flashback which Cami interrupts, he gets all vampy but whooshes off without eating her,

Rebekah is in her room trying to window to get out when the tiles move across the floor and spell out a question “who are you”. Rebekah replies and then gets freaked out by a blonde chick with her hair over her face, Grudge ghost style, who vanishes when the door opens to reveal two of The Kindred. They find out that Bex hasn’t been taking her pills and attack, Bex bites one (that’s disgusting) and knocks the other one out and runs. Creepy blonde reappears  and leads Bex upstairs and away from the Kindred.

Finn busts into the Delphine tomb to rescue Esther but is overcome with revulsion when he sees that she has turned.

Davina and Kol start their spell as it all kicks off at the compound. Aiden gets cut stopping a fight and then two vamps go for him, Josh jumps in to protect his beau but then gets all fangy himself until Klaus steps in and stops him from snacking on his boytoy.

Upstairs in the loony bin ghost girl shows Bex a locked room and then opens it for her apparently, inside is a glass topped coffin in which resides the corporeal body of blondie ghost but we can’t see her face. Bex hears footsteps and leaves the room, the door closes behind her again just as another of the Kindred arrives and she surrenders to him.

Finn confronts his mother’s hypocrisy, he’s furious and determined to carry out their plan to eradicate vampires from the earth as he starts carving the channelling symbol on her forehead. Oh boy, channelling mummy and daddy, that can’t be good for the rest of the Mikaelson clan!

Davina and Kol succeed in their spell and Jackson leads the wolves from the compound, Klaus leaves too but not before he hurls Kol back in with a pack of very hungry vampires as punishment for whatever he has done to Rebekah. Kol scurries off to hide while Marcel holds his vamps off.

Out in the bayou Hayley complains to Jackson about being sick of hearing the word ring, Jackson asks if she’ll hear it just one more time, he has an engagement ring for her. He apologises for how he reacted when she told him about Elijah, he loves her and always has and he knows that she is only going through with this marriage to save her people from enslavement to the witches. He admits that he has messed up a lot of things in the past but he doesn’t want what he has with Hayley to be one of those things and he won’t force her to love him, he just wants to marry her. She accepts.

Klaus calls Elijah and tells him he has things under control regarding Rebekah and that Elijah needs to stay with Hope. Cami intrudes (yet agian) and Elijah apologises for how he acted, she tells him if he wants to talk that’s what she does.

Klaus peers into the now empty Delphine tomb and the empty blood bag that remains while Finn lays his mother in the circle next to his father. He talks to their bodies about Freya and how his parents should never have had more children after they lost her and that he will make them pay for that.

In the compound the vamps are fighting against their hunger while Kol barricades himself in his room, he knocks over a picture of Rebekah as he does so. Poor Bex, over in the crazy cottage her medicated self is put to bed and misses the tiles rearranging themselves into a name.

set your flag Freya

Oh yes, looks like our mystery blonde ghost is none other than big sister Mikaelson.

(I gave this some thought and after Cassie mentioning the Kindred being into necromancy and immortality spells I came up with the theory that evil aunty Dalia is channelling Freya somehow, using the Kindred to guard her body. Bex is going to find out about big sis, bust her out of that coffin and together they are going to join their brothers to protect Hope. Can’t wait to find out what’s actually happening with Freya.)
