Obi Wan Kenobi “Part 6” Review

Obi Wan Kenobi “Part 6” is the sixth episode of the Obi Wan Kenobi original series. Following their escape in episode 5 the rebels do their best to escape the empire fleet chasing them. The ship is damaged and needs time to repair so it can jump to light speed, Obi Wan suggests he distract Vader, giving the rebels time to escape. He says his goodbyes to Leia and asks Raja to get her home. Meeting with Vader on a close by planet that very much looks abandoned. The two finally fight it out, in a fight that has emotional depth as well as Obi Wan finally at his full power. These scenes are interwoven with Reva’s story where she’s on Tatooine looking for the Lars family. Needless to say she finds them and makes short work of what little defence they had, even wounded. Meanwhile Luke has run into the desert and Reva goes off in search of him, accidentally giving himself away by slipping Reva drags him down and he’s knocked out, she goes to kill him but is plagued by images of herself as a youngling and Anakin’s slaughter of her friends. In the end Reva brings Luke’s knocked out body back home, Owen, Peru and Obi Wan let out a sigh of relief when they realise he’s fine, Reva and Obi Wan have a little heart to heart and her story is left open. Finally Obi Wan goes to meet up with Leia under the guise of handing her LOLA back. He has a heart to heart with her too, finally admitting that he did know her parents but asking her to keep it quiet because if anyone knew they’d both be in danger. He goes back to his cave on Tatooine, goes to see Owen and Luke before heading off into nowhere where he sees Qui Gon’s force ghost as Qui Gon and Obi Wan go off into the desert to find somewhere else for him to live.

I Will Do What I Must

I have so many mixed feelings about this episode. On the positive side, it’s cute harmless (for the most part) fun that has a happy enough ending. The battle between Obi Wan and Anakin had me almost in tears, hearing Hayden’s voice through Darth Vader’s mask. In fact pretty much all of Obi Wan’s scenes ranged from fine to great. His talk with Reva was nice and showed that he’s back to being the man we knew just a lot wiser, it has it’s problems which I’ll get into but I enjoyed that, it was heart warming and nice for Reva as a character to know that there’s someone out there who hasn’t given up on her. The many little nods and hints to the OG films and Prequels (specifically Revenge of The Sith) were nice, and yes Obi Wan did say “Hello, there.”

Now onto the things I questioned a little. The slow as all hell opening to the show, obviously trying to set up what the Rebels will become eventually, a cute touch but made the episode feel overly long and bloated. The shot where Obi Wans ship was flying away from the Empire’s guns was hilariously bad, it’s only a small shot but it’s “early YouTube comedy edits” bad but it’s not a joke and it’s shocking how nobody picked up on that. Obi Wan going in depth with Leia about her parents’ personalities’  and then asking her not to say anything, does he need reminding that regardless of her being a really smart 10 year old she’s still a 10 year old with questionable common sense. In episode 2 she was practically screaming that she’d found a Jedi on a lawless planet. She may be smart but she’s still a child and children make childish mistakes, what makes him believe she’ll not accidentally blurt it out? Reva’s “redemption” sure the words exchanged were nice but how on Earth is this a redemption? How many force sensitives, including children potentially has she hunted down? And now she’s suddenly a saint? Her character arc is nowhere to be found, best thing that could’ve been done with her is show her past earlier on, perhaps in episode 2-3, use the rest of the episodes to show how it’s haunting her becoming what she has and by killing Vader and / or Obi Wan she feels she can be free of it, then when she finally accepts and embraces the light side again don’t do it as a bait an switch, have her help protect Luke from potentially the other Inquisitors or Vader himself in the final episode, that way when she laments to Obi Wan “have I become him?” it’ll come from a genuine place we’ve all seen throughout the series and will hit much harder than it does. I just feel Reva was wasted, they had a great story going with her but the whole time, especially this episode, it just felt like she was there to fill in for random segments that couldn’t go anywhere else.

Overall, it was an OK finale to a very average show. I don’t hate it and it has too many flaws for me to just blindly love it but if I want some Star Wars to enjoy and just switch my brain off, this is the way.
