Music Monday – Once More With Feeling

The Grammys 2020

Welcome to the start of the week, it’s Music Monday. This week we are going to take a look at our favourite tracks from the incredible musical episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer – Once More With Feeling – which first aired 15 years ago yesterday. I would have done this for Soundtrack Sunday but I was at the wonderful Wales Comic Con (with Spike, Xander and Joyce Summers!!) and didn’t get home in time!

I could basically just put up every track (yes including “They Got The Mustard Out“) since the entire episode was a work of genius. Instead I asked around and got opinions from my fellow writers here at FANdemonium Towers and some of my best friends. So here we go with our top 5 tracks from Once More With Feeling.

5 – Where Do We Go From Here – Full Cast

The final song, an honest question given everything that happens during the episode…and it ended with THAT kiss – Where Do We Go From Here is a pretty memorable song.

4 – Going Through The Motions – Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy

The first song in the episode sets the tone for the entire thing if you ask me. It’s by turns funny and emotional with some great touches in the action matching up with the lyrics. The line “Nothing seems to penetrate my heart” as Buffy stakes a vamp for example always makes me giggle.

3 – Standing – Anthony Stewart Head as Giles

This song breaks my heart every time I hear it. Anthony Stewart Head is another member of the cast with a musical background and it really shows on this one. It’s one of the moments in the musical that pays off down the line, with Giles leaving Buffy and returning home to England, in such a fundamental way. A very important track!

2 – Walk Through The Fire – All Cast

I love this track as it’s the moment where the fractured Scooby Gang all come back together to save the day! As well as really propelling the story into the final act there are some brilliantly funny lines in there too. “Beady Eyes is right we’re needed, or we could just sit around and glare” from Anya always makes me chuckle and Willow’s “I think these lines must be filler” is gold!

Before I get to the top pick I have a couple of special mentions (yes, I am fully aware I’m cheating but it’s my post 😉 )

First is the truly hilarious medley of I’ve Got A Theory/Bunnies/If We’re Together. I’m including this one because a) Anya’s Bunnies rock ballad is BRILLIANT and b) because at Wales Comic Con this past weekend Nicholas Brendan admitted that he nailed the “It could be witches” bit on the first take and never got it again!

And the second special mention goes to What You Feel. I couldn’t do a post about the musical without mentioning the exceptional talent that is Hinton Battle who played the musical demon Sweet. This smooth little number is so damn catchy I have found myself singing it on numerous occasions in the last 15 years!

Okay – you’ve probably guessed our number 1 by now but if not here it is!

1 – Let Me Rest in Peace – James Marsters as Spike

What is there to say about this one? James Marsters is an amazing singer (check out his band Ghost of the Robot if you don’t believe me) and Spike just oozes emotion/rock god sexiness throughout this song!

That’s it for this Music Monday. Do you agree with our choices FANdemaniacs or did we miss your fave track? We want to know so either drop us a comment or let us know via social media. We look forward to hearing from you!
