Morbius Review

Morbius is the newest feature length movie by Sony Pictures so will not be set in the MCU despite Morbius being a classic enemy of Spider Man. However this film was made in association with Marvel.

Michael Morbius and Milo

This film is actually seriously enjoyable. For so many things, Morbius (Jared Leto) and Milo’s (Matt Smith) friendship being one of them. They each show each other so much loyalty they’re like brothers. With Milo showing a tenacity for fighting back and a compass that doesn’t exactly point north from a very early age. In fact I found myself enjoying Milo’s character and story arc just a tad more than Michael’s. Though at some point they become interchangeable so that’s great.

Really if I were to point out any flaws at all it’s that the third half seemed a little rushed. Like someone was checking things off of a list before the final conflict for our main character. The film is suitably cheesy as only a superhero movie could be but again that’s not a complaint in my book, I’ve seen the MCU do much cheesier things, take itself dead seriously and not get crucified for it so I enjoyed it.

Suitably Comfortable

It’s odd because I feel like the 15 certificate (whatever that is internationally) is going to harm this film without meaning to. People may, whether they mean to or not, see it and assume a gory horror experience meant to be taken as seriously as perhaps The Batman was taken. Yes Morbius has a few gore moments and more than a few typical horror moments in the first half but overall it’s not something that takes itself overly seriously and doesn’t seem to assume or expect it audience to either, leading to a much more enjoyable viewing than I was expecting. The writing does seem like it was written straight from comic book to page at times and there are editing moments in the third act that make it seem like they kinda got stuck during the end and just threw all the action together. Having said that, it’s no different to the original Spider Man or X Men movies, they all suffered the same issues and are seen as enjoyable classics today. I feel like people are going to be harsh on Morbius and I feel that harshness is misplaced. It’s what superhero movies were before they became what they are now and honestly it’s about damn time.

Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris and Jared Leto all steal the spotlight here. They’re all fantastic and make the movie so much fun to watch. I don’t care how cheesy, this film was a massive win for me, it was so enjoyable. Can’t wait to see it again.
