Well with a title like that and a “previously” all about Simmons and the obelisk I figure this episode should be a whole lot of fun…and then a bunch of people die horribly at a Naval officer’s wedding, showing symptoms that look a lot like obelisk-y death.
The waitstaff are HYDRA, seems this was a weapons test that failed – they didn’t kill everyone.
SHIELD are at a dead end on this case, the Navy won’t let them play and Simmons hasn’t given them anything from inside HYDRA yet.
Skye notices alien carvings on Coulson’s desk and starts pushing to try and find out his source but he shuts her down.
Skye’s dad is patching up some thugs in a grotty underground “surgery” when Raina arrives, still freaked from her encounter with Whitehall (understandable). She asks scary dad for the obelisk to give to Whitehall temporarily and he gets very angry, kinda loses it and nearly throttles her.
She only gets away with her life when she reminds him that she is the only one who can bring him Skye. As she leaves she says she really wants to bring Skye to him and he replies that’s not her real name. Oooh, I wonder what it really is…Jeff maybe? Dave? Paul? Wait no…those are minions.
Simmons and Kenneth are busy working on samples from a cow called Bessie who produces carmine milk (a reference to Hellcow, a vampiric bovine who briefly teamed up with Deadpool.
Yes. Really.) when Bakshi arrives and orders them to follow him upstairs straight into a meeting with Whitehall himself. He wants to know why their obelisk-y death test failed and Simmons tells him that she doesn’t think they really did. They really need to obelisk as it’s impossible to replicate the effects of alien tech on the human body without having the tech.
Fitz and ‘Simmons’ discuss Mac’s physique, which is all kindsa hilarious since ‘Simmons’ is just Fitz’s subconscious. ‘Simmons’ is pleased that he recognises that she isn’t real and says he needs to move on since he has other friends now, but he’s still clinging on because he misses her (don’t we all Fitz, don’t we all).
Skye is studying the alien writing on the miracle painting (BTW, did we figure out whether the alien writing was why it survived the fire?), Hunter thinks she needs to push harder to get information like he did when his ex kept secrets (another mention of the ex. I’m telling you, whoever his ex is, she’s going to be a player) and suggests she start with Ward. Ward tells her that Raina knows her dad but Skye isn’t buying what Ward has to sell on that one. She asks about the writing instead and he tells her about Garrett carving it after he was injected with the GH serum. He asks if she is the one doing the carving as he’s concerned she’s going the same way Garrett did (batshit crazy you mean?) and she says no but it gets her thinking.
Raina is at HYDRA and sees Simmons leave on her lunch break so she follows and sees Simmons sending a secret coded message to SHIELD.
Skye confronts Coulson about the carving and he admits it’s him, the discuss the fact she was also injected with the GH formula that caused Garrett and Coulson to start carving. She’s pissed that he has been monitoring her to see if she shows any signs, but he points out perhaps she should be focused on the fact that she isn’t carving weird stuff. She asks why that might be and Coulson suggests it could be that she’s already part alien so the DNA didn’t affect her. Skye is less than impressed by the implication that she’s an alien, despite knowing she is classified as an 084 (Item of Unknown Origin). May interrupts to tell Coulson Raina is on the phone, she wants to set up a meet just as HYDRA goes into lockdown. They have a security breach, a mole leaking info to SHIELD, and the very intimidating (but also gorgeous) Adrianne Palicki is there to find out who it is.
She grills Simmons on her previous life with SHIELD but Simmons pledges her loyalty to HYDRA again. Just as the security team find a flex screen like the one Simmons used to send her message to Coulson in Kenneth’s desk. He is dragged away and Simmons is safe.
The meet with Raina takes place in a restaurant, Coulson is on point, Hunter as close surveillance (which seems to involve some alcoholic beverage with a bit of orange peel in it
a fake Old Fashioned according to the man himself on twitter and yes, blatant excuse for a Hunter screencap 😉 ) and Skye and May are stuck in the kitchen with a grumpy chef. Hunter is surprised that Raina (the tiny girl in the flowery dress) could be a threat. Coulson wants the obelisk from Raina but she says no. She tells him that HYDRA knows they have a mole, and she has a photo of Simmons sending the message.
Speaking of Simmons, she has another confrontation with the scary agent lady, this time she corners her in the loos and pushes for more information, asks if Simmons framed Kenneth and Simmons denies it. The agent says she’s going to check Simmons’ hard drive but Simmons says she has nothing to hide. I really hope that’s true, for your sake Jemma!
Back at the restaurant, Raina says she wants Skye, to take her to meet her dad. She gives Coulson 2 minutes to comply
after which every employee at HYDRA will get an email containing the picture of Simmons. Coulson will not give her Skye, even if it means exposing Simmons. Skye tries to go to save Simmons but May stops her and says Coulson must have a plan. Oh Coulson, this better be the best plan EVER as the countdown ticks to zero and the image is sent!
At HYDRA everyone has the pic of Simmons now, security show up to grab her and she runs, straight into scary agent lady who promptly kicks HYDRA ass with some moves Natasha Romanoff would be proud of.
Turns out she’s Coulson’s plan!
Hunter joins Raina and Coulson at their table and injects Raina with a tracker, they are going to use her to get to Whitehall since he’s going to be coming after her, they will save her but only if she leads them to Skye’s dad.
Morse takes on Bakshi and two more HYDRA goons while Simmons heads for the roof and the extraction team that are meant to be waiting. She can’t see anything but Morse grabs her and they jump off the roof anyway, straight on to a waiting cloaked Quinnjet piloted by Triplet who takes them back to base.
Coulson, May and Hunter are getting ready to go to the address that Raina gave them for Skye’s dad when they realise she has already gone to find it. It’s been cleared out, scary dad has gone but he left a picture for her to find of him with a baby (presumably her).
The rest of the team arrive and find her…and a couple of bodies. Scary dad is watching on a hidden camera and he sees his daughter seeing the bodies of the goons that he’d been operating on. This guy has some major anger management issues, May says one was killed just with brute strength. Hmm, Doctor, anger management issues…if we didn’t already have a Hulk in this world I’d be wondering!
Trip, Simmons and Bobbi Morse arrive back at the playground and Simmons is full of praise for Bobbi, Coulson is pleased since he has asked Bobbi to join their team. Simmons goes to see Fitz while Bobbi says hi to some other members of the team. Mac is pleased to see her, seems they know each other from before.
Hunter is less pleased since BOBBI IS HIS SHE-DEVIL EX!!!!! Oh this ought to be all manner of fun in the future!
Coulson finally shows Skye the huge carving on the wall and she tells him she thinks she knows what it is…a map…But what the hell is it a map of/to?
Guess we’ll have to wait and see on that one!
Oh dear, it seems HYDRA are on the move after being exposed by not just one but two covert SHIELD agents in their ranks (Go girls) when scary dad shows up, takes out one guard with a scalpel to the neck and another with his briefcase before offering Whitehall the contents of the case.
The Obelisk (or The Diviner as it is really called) and says he wants to work with HYDRA to kill Coulson….and everyone else!
