Academy Award winning actress Kate Winslet has been cast in a starring role in James Cameron’s Avatar sequels.

After what feels like a lifetime of preparation, the follow ups to the 2009 blockbuster are finally in production. I say follow ups because there are another 4 movies in the works!!!

Many of the actors from the first movie including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver, are returning to Pandora. A collection of children have been cast to play Na’vi children and the likes of Cliff Curtis (Training Day) and Oona Chaplin (Quantum of Solace) have also joined.

Cameron, always keen to have A-listers in his movies, has been trying his best to get some big names. Though he failed to convince Josh Brolin to come onboard, the director was able to make the Avatar sequel a Titanic reunion by bringing on Kate Winslet.

According to Deadline, Winslet has been cast as a character referred to as Ronal. The report did not state if this individual is one of the human characters or Na’vi. Cameron had this to say about the development:

“Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which is one of the most rewarding of my career. I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life”

Is Winslet making a career gamble?

Despite Winslet’s history with Cameron this news has come as a surprise to many. Though the actress did have a supporting role in the Divergent series, she has largely steered clear of big budget movies. Winslet tends to appear in prestige dramas that have hopes of contenting for awards, such as Steve Jobs or new movie The Mountain Between Us. This is the first time Winslet will lend her talents to bona-fide blockbuster films. It’ll be interesting to learn more details about her character as the Avatar sequels make their way through production. Its unknown how many of the follow ups Winslet will be appearing in. If she’s “starring” then its likely to be a key role that will be carried through multiple sequels.

Getting Winslet is huge for the Avatar world, as in a way its given the sequels more credibility. Though the first movie was the biggest box office hit of all time and earned a Best Picture nomination, some have questioned the need for four followups to a movie that left a minimal footprint on pop culture. The allure of Winslet should be enough to pique the interest of casual audiences and hardened viewers, if only to see her come out of her shell and see what she brings to the table. Something about what Cameron has up his sleeve is enough to get Winslet onboard.

The sequels are given the following release dates:

Avatar 2 release date : December 18th 2020

Avatar 3 release date: December 17th 2021

Avatar 4 release date: December 20th 2024

Avatar 5 release date: December 19th 2025

We will post further news as and when we get it!! Let us know your views on the Avatar sequels
