‘Insurgent’ On Track for Bigger Opening Than ‘Divergent’

Insurgent is heading for a $57 million opening weekend, according to industry tracking.

If that number holds, the debut will be bigger than that of Divergent, the first film adaptation of Veronica Roth’s bestselling series of novels. That initial chapter in the futuristic franchise kicked off to $54.6 million last March, going on the make $150.9 million domestically and $288.7 million worldwide.

With nearly a month to go before “Insurgent” premieres on March 20, that opening figure could improve.

Tickets for “Insurgent” went on sale this week at outlets such as Fandango and MovieTickets.com.
