Trailer

Revelations abound this week as secrets are revealed and links become clearer. This episode is packed and not a minute feels wasted.

Wars of Words

There are many confrontations this week. On all fronts it seems that battles of will are playing out. Magda’s all out quest for the hearts and minds of all the players on the board is coming to a climax but it doesn’t all seem to be going in her favour. Tiago has a verbal skirmish with Miss Adelaide, Lewis with Townsend, but when the two detectives reunite some of the holes start to fill in. That was really interesting actually, when Tiago is in Miss Adelaide’s office you can practically SEE the cogs turning as he is working things out.

There’s a surprising discussion between Lewis and Alex that left me rather puzzled and more than a little concerned.

The Doctor Will See You

There’s an absolutely outstanding scene with Peter Craft and his wife Linda that had me bouncing in my seat with delight. Piper Perabo’s vitriolic performance is glorious! You can practically taste the venom oozing as she speaks.

Rory Kinnear likewise has a couple of outstanding scenes this episode. The first is when he comes up against Ethan Peck’s Hermann at the German American Bund dinner. It’s taken a long time but I think the Doctor has finally found himself. We certainly find out who he really is. Then there’s a scene right at the end of this episode between Peter, Elsa and Maria that took such a left turn from what I expected I actually yelled.

Going Underground

The shot in the trailer of Townsend and Kurt where Kurt asks if they are safe is part of a really interesting scene. It certainly left me with a few questions, but at the same time a hope in my heart that I know is foolish and likely to hurt in the end.

The Old Coyote

Maria’s faith in Santa Muerte, and her talisman of the old Coyote are sorely tested this week. The scenes towards the end of the episode with Maria and Frank were absolutely chilling. Santino Barnard is absolutely phenomenal, creepy to the core.

The episode left me with more questions yet again, and a feeling that Magda might just be losing the upper hand. She’s having to battle pretty hard and turn her attentions to other players.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 8 – Hide and Seek – airs Sunday June 14th at 10/9c. It’s also streaming now on the SHOWTIME website (subscription required).
