Can this be another “Cups” on our hands?
A new song from Into the Woods has been released, and it’s full audio of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) singing one of her big numbers from the musical, “On the Steps of the Palace.” In it, Cinderella wonders what her future holds.
The way she manages to sing such vivid wordplay, and capture the detail that Stephen Sondheim’s iconic lyrics, is mesmerizing.
“And then what if you are?/ What a prince would envision?” Kendrick beautifully sings. “But then how can you know/ Who you are till you know/ What you want, which I don’t?/ So then which do you pick/ Where you’re safe, out of sight/ And yourself, but where everything’s wrong?/ Or where everything’s right/ But you know that you’ll never belong?”
In a behind-the-scenes video of the same number, Meryl Streep, Sondheim and Kendrick discuss the song.
“There’s a lot that [Cinderella] is thinking about when faced with the opportunity for her dream to come true; she’s not sure if she’s going to choose the dream or what she knows is safe,” Kendrick explains.
Prince Charming is played by Chris Pine, so you could also argue there isn’t a whole lot to consider here.
