How many times have you turned on the TV the past month and saw a commercial for American Horror Story: Freak Show? I know I see them all the time. From the bearded lady, played by Kathy Bates to the Strongman, played by Michael Chiklas, the commercials and trailers keep coming. However, if you can step away from the circus oddities on the boob tube, and immerse yourself into the Broadway scene, you can see a different outlook on the same storyline.
Where Freak Show is taking the edgy images of contortionists and clowns by storm through the streets of NYC, Sideshow on Broadway is taking the glamorous route. Director Bill Condon has taken the older version of the musical and revamped it. Hopefully, by bringing it from a darker musical to one that is more romantic, it will surpass the 1997 version and stay around longer than 4 months. It seems so far the show has had a bigger following, first playing at La Jolla Playhouse and then moving across country to the Kennedy Center.
It’s good to see that both forms of entertainment can spin the same idea into two completely different stories. I, for one, can’t wait to see what Bill Condon came up with when I see the Sideshow next week.
