First look: Final days of a rock star in ‘The Last Beat’

Shawn Andrews and Cameron Richardson star in the drama loosely based on Jim Morrison’s life.

The finale of Jim Morrison’s life plays out again — at least on film fictionally.
Written, directed and produced by Robert Saitzyk (Godspeed), the indie musical drama The Last Beat is loosely inspired by the last days of the iconic Doors frontman in Paris circa 1971, and follows Jay Douglas (Shawn Andrews of Dazed and Confused), an American rock star who takes his poetry to France for inspiration and becomes embroiled in a love triangle.
Cameron Richardson (Shameless) co-stars as Douglas’ girlfriend Valerie Eason, and the cast also includes Kevin Corrigan and Seymour Cassel, a character actor who actually met Morrison in May of 1969 when both appeared at poetry readings at Los Angeles’ Cinematheque 16. (Another piece of music trivia: Cassel was the guy who gave Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Saul Hudson his nom du rock, Slash.)
The Last Beat is currently in production, and filmmakers will be updating the movie’s Facebook page with songs from the movie and other news.
