Overall Thoughts – “Insolubilia”
Amy- Opening the episode off with Gator and his crew dressed up in their Nightmare Before Christmas mask was perfectly set up with the right vibes. The home invasion 100% felt like it belonged in Home Alone. Seeing Joe Keery with the spiked baseball bat made me feel all giddy. Though I did chuckle when he almost got hurt with it twice. Dot’s (Juno Temple) reaction upon seeing Gator got me thinking about the nature of her relationship with him during her marriage to Roy (Jon Hamm). I mean, seriously, what’s the deal there? How close were they?
Dot’s lies are completely unraveling, with her being pulled in so many directions as she is trying to keep up with it all. And now the FBI is getting involved. With Wayne now knowing her real name, it’s only a matter of time before everyone knows about her past.
Clare- You say Home Alone, I have fricking pivoted now. I realized after rewatching episode 3 that there has been a lot of incidental music from The Shining, and that was driven home HARD by Gator taking the baseball bat to the door while mom and kid escape out the window. Joe with the spiked bat did make me giggle, nice little nod there. As for his relationship with Dot/Nadine… did I hallucinate him calling her “momma”? Cos that changes things BIG TIME.
Wayne is definitely the weak link in Dot’s chain. She has carefully armoured herself, protecting everything she used to be under layers of Minnesota Nice, but his brain getting a hard reboot from the electrocution could be the thing that brings it all down. Absolutely loved the final scene with Roy, Josh (Sean Depner), and Lenore (Kelsey Falconer). Roy seeming so sure of himself that all the loose ends are tied up now. You just know that’s gonna unravel. I did like the callback to the first scene with him in episode 2 though, shows he is 100% a man of his word, cos he said he was gonna come by and check on Lenore.
