The talented writing and directing duo of Chris Miller and Phil Lord are balancing a Star Wars Anthology film centered on a young Han Solo, a Spider-Man animated movie, the LEGO Movie sequel, a third Jump Street movie (23 Jump Street?!), and Fox’s Last Man on Earth.
Out of those projects, Miller and Lord are only directing the Han Solo film, and writing the animated Spider-Man. Miller and Lord remain on the other projects as executive producers. While promoting Last Man on Earth at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, Miller shared his thoughts on Han Solo and why they jumped at the chance to chronicle his early adventures.
“I could talk to you for a day about why [Han Solo] is the perfect blend of rogue-ish cowboy,” said Miller. “Morally ambiguous, but has a clear moral compass. He’s funny, he’s off the cuff… When I was a kid on the playground, fights were about who got to play Han Solo. He’s just one of the best characters ever created.”
Miller went on to say,
“It’s a huge pressure. We always try and find something that’s gonna make us… give a fire to our bellies and do a really good job. And this feels like there’s a lot of pressure to not screw this up. So we’ve definitely got that motivation and then the rest of it is about trying to give audiences a fresh experience that doesn’t feel like you’re just trying to check off some checklist of beats that you’re expecting and make something that feels new and exciting for people, but at the same time honoring what was so great about that character.”
Miller didn’t mention specifics about the Han Solo film’s story, he said that the Spider-Man animated movie “is not just another Peter Parker origin story that you’ve seen 400 times. It is something totally unique and different and not like anything you’ve seen. That’s all I can say… and you’re going to love it!”
Star Wars Anthology: Han Solo is slated to arrive in theaters on May 25, 2018. The Spider-Man animated movie will follow on July 20, 2018.
