The Challenges of Building a Dalek: Part 17

Be sure to read the previous parts of The Challenges of Building a Dalek. We are dealing with a new type of problem, a possible hurricane threat.

Dalek Build -- Part 17 -- will not fit doorwayExtreme Weather

As I mentioned before, you need to consider where you build your dalek. Florida went from extreme heat to now we are dealing with a possible hurricane threat. With the threat of the hurricane fast approaching, we wanted to move our dalek build into the house, but we have come across a problem. He’s four inches too wide to fit through the back door. He can fit through the front door but we have been having severe thunderstorms nightly; it’s now to the point where you step onto the grass your feet start to sink a little. So, we are unable to get around the house to the front door because of the ground being marsh-like.

With the storm being a possible threat, as the exact track of the storm is still unknown, we have thought of a few ways to protect the build while it is still outside in the elements. The dalek’s builder group had mentioned that the doorway must be ADA size in order for the dalek to fit through properly. Though this just confirmed that we now know the daleks greatest enemy and it’s not the doctor, it’s a standard doorway.

Dalek Build -- Part 17 -- dalek in the sunHemispheres

We have finally bought a new mold as our last one sadly lost its shine. Now that we have a new mold, we are back up to half speed of making more hemispheres. We’ve been having some slight issues with our resin as it’s not either drying right or mixing right after we unmold them some are still tacky, have mystery grooves, or a giant air bubble that is somehow on the edge. Some of these defected hemispheres we are able to save and somehow salvage but most have gone to the pile of paperweights we’ve collected. Dad says he’s going to find a way to use the defective ones in the garden.

Current Design

Currently, the neck is about 10 inches in height; and about 16 inches in diameter. When you add it to the base it stands at 62.5 inches, 1587.5 millimeters, including the wheels. Derek the Dalek is currently a bright hunter green and will be having soul-sucking black hemispheres around the base. We are in the process of looking for another electronic scooter/wheelchair to make the next dalek to make more of today’s version of the dalek.
