Attack On Titan Final Season Epiosde 1 Review – And so it begins…
The long awaited final season of Attack On Titan is finally here and oh boy was it worth the wait.
With a new studio. Mappa. Doing the animation and a whole new direction heading into the final season. It’s understandable why this is one of the hottest anime around right now.
Previously on Attack On Titan
Historia becomes Queen of the walls and the Survey Corps takeover is successful in overthrowing the corrupt government. We find out, that Eren’s father came from another land across the sea. A place called Marley. The beast Tiatn, Zeke, is Eren’s half brother and has royal blood as his mother was of royal descent. Armin eats Berthold and becomes the next Colossal Titan holder and powers that Eren didn’t even know he had seem to be stirring…
Final Season Episode 1 Overview
The first episode here opens up with one of the new Characters, Falco, staring up at a bird in the sky telling it to “fly away. Far, far away from here…” this is clearly meant to mirror Eren’s first appearance in the anime as he does almost the same thing. The only difference being, Falco is dazed because he’s in the middle of a war zone.
Falco is saved by his big brother, Colt, who has taken over the operation to recover lands for Marley. He makes a comment about “going whoosh whoosh with swords against the tirans” but he’s quickly silenced by his friends who think he’s just lost his mind a bit.
Gabi is the next character to be introduced to us and… she’s basically S1 Eren but with a little more cunning. This again is probably no accident, Gabi’s personality being so close to Eren’s when he was her age is definitely hinting at something.
The Cart Titan is back! And we’re introduced to the Jaw Titan! Both Armoured and Beast Titans are back and look amazing!
The group of young Eldian soldiers must stake their lives to claim more land for Marley. That’s how the higher up Marley officials decide who gets to inherit the Armoured and Beast titans.
However, the enemy has a ton of anti-titan technology. The trains on the track fire rounds so powerful, even the Armoured Titan almost gets instantly killed by them.
Marley are quickly realising that having the power of titans without the coordinate (Eren’s titan) won’t be enough to continue their stranglehold on society and eventually they’ll be outdone.
The episode ends with a win for Marley but a very very narrow one…
Review
I honestly loved this episode. As far as first episodes go, it had pretty much everything you could ask for. It’s stayed true to the manga and has thrown enough hints out there that will have people throwing out theories like there’s no tomorrow, for the manga readers who already know how this goes it’s a little nudge and wink. Cheekily acknowledging that they know they’ve got our attention.
It gets the right balance of action and exposition spot on so you don’t ever feel bored. It also never says too much. Though I will say that the ending credits are a little spoiler-heavy but again that’s only if you know what to look for. For example if someone hinted a spoiler at you and you saw those images you’d not need a ton of common sense to figure out exactly what’s going on. But hopefully, noone is doing that, especially not to fans who don’t want to know.
