American Gods cast Marilyn Manson in a role you’d definitely expect
American Gods have cast singer-songwriter, Marilyn Manson, ahead of its eagerly-anticipated third season – and the role he’s playing is hardly surprising.
The ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)’ hitmaker is set to play Johan Wengren, the lead singer of a Viking rock group called Blood Death.
The band – whose favorite genre is heavy metal, naturally – will act as a source of power for Ian McShane’s mysterious Mr. Wednesday.
As reported by Deadline, Manson has signed on for four episodes in total.
“As a long-time admirer of his estimable talent as an author, artist, musician and actor, it is dope indeed to be working with Mr. Manson in season 3 of American Gods,” showrunner Chic Eglee said.
“Bringing his specific energy, wit and boundless enthusiasm for all-things-Neil Gaiman to the role of Johan, a Norse ‘berserker’ in service to Odin, his performance promises to be disturbing, original, and uniquely entertaining.”
Based on the Neil Gaiman fantasy novel of the same name, American Gods follows Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), who gets embroiled in a war between Old Gods and New Gods.
The former is based in religion and culture – such as Mr. Wednesday, Bilquis (Yetide Badaki) and Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) – while the latter represents the modern world, like Media (Gillian Anderson/Kahyun Kim) and Technical Boy (Bruce Langley).
American Gods airs on Starz in the US and Amazon Prime in the UK.
