9-1-1 – Episode 3 and 4 Review

9-1-1 – The Devil You Know – is episode 3 of season 6. The Devil You Know aired Monday, October 3rd. This episode’s review will be a little different as we dive deep into the past as Athena investigators a mystery. The Devil You Know is very different from the typical 9-1-1 episodes we usually get, as it focuses entirely on Athena and Bobby.

While in Florida caring for her ailing father, Athena (Angela Bassett) and Bobby (Peter Krause) investigate the disappearance of her childhood friend from 45 years ago.

Overall Thoughts on the Episode

When Athena was a child, a girl disappeared and her case dominates this episode. In the episode before, Athena’s childhood home revealed the remains of the child. As the episode progresses Athena and Bobby uncover more and more clues about what happened the night that Tanya disappeared as they attempt to find out and clear her father’s name. As the episode reaches its climax, they figured out who killed Tanya and encased her in the cement inside Athena’s childhood home. It is discovered that Athena’s childhood friend, Junior Franklin (Kevyn Morrow) was the killer and his father covered it up. After catching the killer, it was discovered that he had killed six other girls and they were still discovering more.

This episode was not our typical 9-1-1 episode; we got to see a flash of Athena’s past, a past that has affected Athena for 45 years. The fact that Athena has been hinting at becoming a police officer from a young age was also revealed. In my opinion, this episode did not further the plot of the overall show but it did develop Athan’s character a little more with this insight from her past.

Honorable Mentions

In this week’s episode Eddie (Ryan Guzman) finds out that his son, Christopher (Gavin McHugh) has been lying to him for weeks about skipping the science club and it really makes him about what else his son has been lying to him about. During all of this, Buck (Oliver Stark) is asked if he would be willing to donate sperm to a friend and his wife. His old friend lets him off the hook since it’s been a few years since they spoke/saw each other. So, Buck seeks out guidance from Hen on what he should do.

My Favorite and/or Least Favorite Part

Something I did not know is when a tree fall exposing all of its roots, said fallen tree can snap back up when the debris that’s pinning it down falls away. That the tension from the root system that is still underground can pull it back up. It is not just me that didn’t know this; as a birdwatcher got trapped under the roots when the tree snapped back up. The team has to work together in order to get the tree to tip back over while watching out for the pressure that is on the birdwatcher’s chest. Thet were able to get the tree off of the victim and get his pulse back.

“I think curiosity killed the birdwatcher!”

Standout Moment

This week’s standout moment goes to Chimney who was assisting a drunk driver when the driver woke up and took off from the scene of an accident with Chimney still in the car. Buck jumps into action as he grabs a bike and chases after the car. Multiple cop cars are chasing after the drunk driver as Chimney tries to talk some sense into the driver. While Buck takes a few shortcuts and stops in front of the drunk driver. Luckily the driver stops just short of Buck, have to admit Buck did look like a deer in headlights as the car came to a stop.

Overall Thoughts on the Episode

The last call of the episode gave much-needed laughs; as the call before brought up Maddie’s (Jennifer Love Hewitt) dark past with domestic violence. When Maddie helps a mother and daughter from their abuser. A very drunk Hen and Buck receive a call from the 118 of a coding dog who was overdosing on opioids. She tells the 118 how much Narcan is needed to bring back the dog. It really shows that Hen does have the potential to be a great doctor. As she did all the math in her head while drunk. This episode also shows how Christopher is growing up and doesn’t need his father protecting him as much. It also brings up the tone that Buck eventually wants a family; we’ve seen how great he is with Christopher.

Be sure to return for next week’s preview.
