Clary Is One Step Closer To Finding The Mortal Cup In Shadowhunters: Of Men and Angels

To free her mother Jocelyn (Maxim Roy) from Valentine’s (Alan Van Sprang) clutches, Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) has to find the Mortal Cup. In Season 1 Episode 6 titled “Of Men and Angels,” the shadowhunter finds a new ally who will help her locate it.

In the latest episode of Shadowhunters, Clary will step into her past. Of course, this will prove to be a difficult task since all her memories have been erased. Nonetheless, she will find a new ally when she least expects it. Luke (Isaiah Mustafa) will tell her that there are several clues in the mundane world.

In the promo, Luke says,

“She [Jocelyn] didn’t think this was going to happen. She made provisions just in case it did.”

Luke provided more clues about her past by revealing the truth about his relationship with Jocelyn. The flashbacks to a young Valentine, Jocelyn and Luke in Idris was amazing. We find out that Luke was Valentine’s parabatai, and that Val was also responsible for Luke being turned into a werewolf. The trip to the past was long over due, but I am glad they finally got around to it and stressing to Clary the importance of The Mortal Cup and why Valentine cannot get his on it.

Elsewhere in the episode, Jace (Dominic Sherwood) and Simon had a war of words. Reason? Clary, of course. The two fought over the red-haired shadowhunter and the parabatai told Simon that he’s been friendzoned all along and doesn’t stand a chance with Clary. OUCH! The look on poor Simon’s face was bad.

Jace calls Simon (Alberto Rosende) a mundane and this upsets him more than it should. If you all remember that Simon is anything but a mundane after his recent rendezvous with vampire Camille. It remains to be seen if Simon will make his new powers obvious. Jace being observant, only when Clary isn’t around it seems, seems to be piecing together Simon’s new confidence, swagger and strength. Asking, what really happened that night he needed recusing from the vampires.

The real fun of the episode and what we all were waiting for was Magnus and Alec and their first date. It was building up and building up, and Harry Shum Jr, as Magnus, played it brilliantly. He was flashy, coy, fun and entertaining. The onscreen chemistry between him and Matthew Daddario (Alec Lightwood) is magic.

Magnus needing to help save Luke, asks Jace to bring the powerful one to him. Of course he did need Alec, but there was also that ploy to see him again. Poor Alec was dealing with his overbearing mother, Maryse (Nicola Correia-Damude) who was plotting with his father Robert Lightwood (Paulino Nunes) to marry off both he and Izzy to save the Lightwood name. But Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia), Alec’s sister, is bent on letting Alec live his own life and make his own choices. The date didn’t happen until the last 5 minutes of the episode, but it was magical. Magnus trying to let Alec be Alec and be honest with himself.

So may twists and turns. At the end of the episode we see Izzy taking one for the team, or is she, dressing like her mom, very conservative, presentable attire, hair pulled back, the works. If she is doing this to let Alec be Alec, amazing, but doesn’t she deserve to be happy to? I guess we will have to tune in next week to see what happens next.

Shadowhunters airs Tuesdays, 8 p.m. on Freeform.
