Neil Gaiman, DC to release new Sandman Universe in August

More Sandman from Neil Gaiman and DC in August

The Sandman comic line is being resurrected in August, with new characters and stories, EW reports.

Neil Gaiman’s award winning comic is returning, and bringing several characters back into the fold.

DC will be launching four new Sandman comics, and it all starts with a one shot in August.

Who Is Sandman?

First of all, for the uninitiated, Sandman was a comic that defied genre pigeonholing. Because it used horror, superhero, detective, and supernatural elements as needed to weave compelling stories, it quickly became a fan favorite.

It centers around Morpheus, the living embodiment/master of dreams and his siblings, The Endless.

For returning fans, we’ll see old favorites, including Lucifer. We will also be introduced to new characters and stories as well.

Neil will be overseeing the project, yet it will be written by different talent.

We Need Another Hero

Sandman comics sometimes blended storytelling by Gaiman with other DC titles. The master of the Dreaming and his family have notably worked with John Constantine, Martian Manhunter, and other members/villains of DC. Seriously, who can forget Death and Constantine and the banana?

It’s already been determined that Lucifer(Who has since gotten his own show on FOX) will be returning. If these new comics succeed-it’s Sandman, guys. How could it not-could that mean an expansion into regular DC continuity far enough to warrant a movie? Probably so. I’m all for Sandman induced dream sequences involving The Justice League, if it means additional cameos by fan favorites Death and Delirium.

The Immortal Beloved(s)

Sandman and his Endless siblings will be another warmly welcomed returning series. This is because superheroes may be nearing a bubble burst since taking over media of late. The cast of irregular regulars could always certainly be counted on to provide an excellent story without resorting to tropes.  And in a media drenched world of the same capes and same smashing things, this will be welcome.

Maybe You Should Get Caught Up

Finally; It’s almost August. So to prepare for the August release, pick up or check your local library for the most noteworthy collected stories, including:

  • Preludes and Nocturnes: Where it all began, and DC cameo heavy.
  • Dream Country: This collection includes the award winning story “Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
  • The Kindly Ones: Morpheus must facet the Furies, ancient deities of vengeance.
