Under The Covers – Music Monday
This Music Monday I wanted to delve into the world of cover versions, in particular those that really take the original and make it their own. So it’s time to get Under the Covers with some of our favourites!
Lick me like a Lollipop!
First up is Framing Hanley and their cover of Lollipop by Lil’ Wayne
(The actual song kicks in around the 2:15 mark if you don’t want to watch a bunch of emo kids at an extravagant house party)
I loved Framing Hanley before they split, and there’s something about that opening guitar that just gets me. Plus lead singer Kenneth Nixon is one fine looking dude which always helps.
Bloodywood – Mundian to Bach ke Rahi
I first discovered Bloodywood when their video Jee Veerey was doing the rounds on my social media. I love Mundian to Bach ke Rahi anyway, so an Indian folk metal cover version was just too good to pass up.
Closer
This version of the Chainsmokers ft Halsey track Closer by Kina Grannis just has something about it.
I don’t know if it’s the switch to a female vocalist, or maybe the more stripped down vibe it has. Whatever it is I prefer this one to either the original or some of the other covers I’ve heard. Bonus – the always amazing Harry Shum Jr. co-starring and dancing!
Hazy Shade…
Gerard Way, mercurial writer of both songs and comics. His two loves collided with spectacular effect earlier this year as his comic creation The Umbrella Academy was adapted on to Netflix. Way and My Chemical Romance bandmate Ray Toro put together this blistering cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s Hazy Shade of Winter for the soundtrack!
Shake that ass
The Dave Matthews Band are known to perform a cover of Prince’s Sexy M.F. at some shows as an outro to their song Jimi Thing.
You can watch the whole performance or skip to 16:52 to hear Dave get kinda dirty with it!
BONUS
We thought this post was done, and then Pop Punk legends New Found Glory did THIS
We hope you’ve enjoyed getting Under the Covers with us this Music Monday. See you again soon #FANdemaniacs.
