Statham to follow up Craig role

Jason Statham has bought the rights to JJ Connolly’s novel Viva La Madness, the sequel to Layer Cake.

The Expendables star will take on the role played by Daniel Craig in Matthew Vaughn‘s 2004 film after he and his manager and producing partner Steve Chasman acquired the rights, Deadline reported.

In Layer Cake, James Bond star Daniel played an unnamed successful drug dealer whose last job went badly wrong. Viva La Madness, which took Connolly 10 years to write, sees his anti-hero looking for a beach to land on now he has retired, only to get caught up in yet more crime, involving trans-Atlantic drug deals and Venezuelan cartels.

Connolly – who recently wrote heist feature H for Guy Ritchie – will adapt the book for the big screenplay himself.
