Definitely reccomend this one. I gave the plot a larger score than usual for such a bare story simply because it plays well into the makeup of the game. 100% would reccomend to a friend. Especially one who loves Star Wars.

Star Wars: Squadrons Game Review – Let the space dogfights begin!

A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. Squadrons is amazing!

Let’s just be honest real quick here though. You’re not gonna play this game for it’s solid plot, you’re gonna play it for it’s super intense space battles.

It’s honestly hard to believe that this game was developed by the same developers that gave us SW Battlefront 2, Motive Studios. But that is the case and who cares really, as long as the game is good.

Plot

The plot is pretty basic, I’m not gonna go into too many details because spoilers for those who haven’t played it. The game begins after the destruction of Alderaan in Star Wars Episode IV. Darth Vader sends his squad of TIE fighter pilots out to weed out any and all refugees that may have escaped the attack. Your character is part of that group at the beginning, then after a while you switch sides to control an X-Wing.

I gotta say. As much as the story is kinda trope-y and barebones. It’s clearly only there so you can experience playing in each vehicle at some point in the game. This is something it does very well. The story isn’t too investing or strong but when considering the layout of the game it is smartly played out and the pacing is pretty much perfect.

Gameplay

Oh boy here comes the good stuff. There really isn’t much I can say here other than: wow! Taking control of an X-Wing or TIE fighter is all I wanted as a kid and now my dreams are coming true! Even without using the VR feature it’s still super realistic, to the point where the game is genuinely pretty hard.

I’m used to space shooters but because this incorporates into it a small part of emulator it totally threw me off. It took a while to get used to checking everywhere around me. Checking my laser levels. Checking my speed. Making sure I’m not going too fast. And that’s just the basics.

Obviously in VR it’s a whole different story. I’m not going to use the word better because the game handles itself expertly on it’s own. But it’s much more involved. I’m pretty sure at some point I mumbled “rebel scum” angrily to myself as an X-Wing just about evaded me…

Overall thoughts

I did scramble with the idea that maybe. Just maybe. I enjoyed Squadrons much more than I thought I did just because it was such a surprise to me that it was actually quality. I’m not gonna get into developer wars here but we all know EA are pretty much there own meme by now.

After careful deliberation. Hours of shooting people out of the sky. And even more hours of pondering I’m certain now that isn’t the case. Squadrons is just simply a great game. I haven’t gone into the multiplayer stuff because I don’t have EA play pass but the campaign alone makes it worth every penny.

Heads up though, if you don’t like space shooters in general this isn’t going to be the game for you. It doesn’t bring anything to the table to convert someone who doesn’t already love the genre.
