Soundtrack Sunday: Purple Rain (1984)

On April 21, 2016, Prince was found dead at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota. The world will never be the same. The musical genius’s life was cut short. While we are awaiting the cause of death, the tributes pour in all over the world. And our Soundtrack Sunday post is not exception. Today I took over the column from Mo, to mourn and celebrate Prince.

This week’s Soundtrack Sunday, I wanted to look back at his legendary movie, Purple Rain. I was a a kid when Purple Rain came out. I was really way to young to see this movie, I didn’t know anything about it, except that Prince was in it, I begged my dad to take me and he did, several times that summer.

Prince was all over MTV, you know when they played music videos, and this movie this soundtrack solidified his rock royalty status. Throughout the 80s and 90s you couldn’t turn on MTV without hearing news of Prince, or a new hit on the TV. He was everywhere, and changing the sound of music.

It’s hard not to tear up, and even cry when I think of what the world has lost. I didn’t know him. I was lucky to see him in concert once. But he was part of the soundtrack of my life. The reason we cry when an artist dies, can be summed up in a quote I found on twitter:

“Thinking about how we mourn artists we’ve never met. We don’t cry because we knew them, we cry because they helped us know ourselves” – @ElusiveJ

So it’s ok to mourn Prince. Cry when you think of all the times you had with him. Cry because the world lost a one of a kind talented icon. But celebrate all that was and is a musical genius.

I now introduce you to Soundtrack Sunday:  Purple Rain

A brief synopsis of Purple Rain

A victim of his own anger, the Kid (Prince) is a Minneapolis musician on the rise with his band, the Revolution, escaping a tumultuous home life through music. While trying to avoid making the same mistakes as his truculent father (Clarence Williams III), the Kid navigates the club scene and a rocky relationship with a captivating singer, Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero). But another musician, Morris (Morris Day), looks to steal the Kid’s spotlight — and his girl.

Prince – I would Die 4 U.
