Soundtrack Sunday: Independence Day (1996)

Soundtrack Sunday

This week I thought I would go to one of my favourite blockbuster films, with news of a new one being made which will hit cinemas in June this year I thought it would be nice to revisit the sounds that accompanied this film.

This film centres around an Alien invasion and it all starts with mysterious ships approaching the planet and sitting above the major cities in the world. After much wonderment and trying to figure out what was going on, with a certain type of people on mass worshipping them and many people leaving the cities upon first sight of these arrivals one man discovers a signal and knows it’s a bad thing. He manages to get to the white house where his ex-wife is working and tells her they need to leave and with a little argument and persuasion the white house staff leave. Only just in time as the thing that was dreaded happens.

With a cast like Will Smith as a fighter Pilot, Jeff Goldblum as the genius who works out the signal, Bill Pullman as the president of the United States, Judd Hirsch as the father of the genius who is wiser than most including the odd White house member of staff and we even get Brent Spiner as an Area 51 nerd who at the time I was quite shocked looked nothing like his role on Star Trek TNG.

The music ranges from made for the sequences and the odd song placed in for irony value, but I must say if you haven’t seen this film and want to know what happened before the new one hits the cinema please do watch now.
