The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break the news that Sony’s The 5th Wave, the adaptation of Rick Yancey’s popular YA novel, is rounding out the cast ahead, adding Sons of Anarchy star Maggie Siff and Hart of Dixie actress Talitha Bateman.
Chloe Grace Moretz will be starring in the film as Cassie, a teen girl who is one of the human survivors after four waves of increasingly deadly attacks left most of Earth decimated. She’s on a mission to rescue her younger brother Sammy, while also trying to prepare for inevitable and lethal fifth wave of attacks by the aliens.
Siff will play Cassie and Sammy’s mother Lisa, who suffers terribly when the third wave releases a plague on Earth. Bateman will play Teacup, a young girl who is also in the child army where Sammy is being held.
Directed by J Blakeson from a screenplay by Susannah Grant, The 5th Wave also stars Nick Robinson, Alex Roe, Maika Monroe, Liev Schreiber and Ron Livingston.
After hitting shelves in May 2013, The 5th Wave book spending 21 weeks on The New York Times’ best-sellers list and selling 300,000 hardcover units and 80,000 e-books. The second book in the series, The Infinite Sea, came out Sept. 16 via Penguin’s Putnam Juvenile. A trilogy is planned, which means if the Sony film works, there’s the possibility of a new YA film franchise.
