Penny Dreadful: City of Angels

Drawing inexorably closer to the finale, the penultimate episode of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels – Sing Sing Sing focuses on family and new allegiances. This is not going to be a very long preview. There’s a lot going on but I’d have to get spoilery to talk about it!

Synopsis

In danger, Tiago and Lewis must make bold decisions. With Townsend (Michael Gladis) at the end of his rope, he’s forced to turn to a last resort. Spurred by Elsa, Peter (Rory Kinnear) decides to take Tom (Julian Hilliard), Trevor (Hudson West) and Frank (Santino Barnard) to the movies. Lewis oversees the prison transfer of Diego Lopez (Adan Rocha) as Tiago and Molly (Kerry Bishé) go dancing at the Crimson Cat, where they confront the rest of the Vega family. Starring Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, and Nathan Lane.

Trailer

This week almost all roads lead to the Crimson Cat as the Vega family are reunited for the first time since the premiere (I think). Everything in this episode builds up to the family (and Sister Molly) being together and there’s a growing sense of uneasiness. I can’t help but feel, given Rio’s presence at the Cat, that the reunion is going to end in disaster.

Elsewhere

Aside from the Vegas we see the Craft/Branson household trying to behave more like a proper family with a trip downtown to go to the movies. I have a feeling this is going to be very significant in the finale.

Lewis has a pretty huge part to play in this episode. He seems to basically have run out of patience after being shot at in the previous episode. After a very tense confrontation with Goss he makes a surprising alliance “for life”. That worries me as I get the feeling at least one of the lives involved isn’t going to last much longer. He’s also responsible for taking Diego to the rendezvous with the guards from San Quentin who will take him in. A journey which does not go to plan.

Father’s Day

Townsend makes an unpleasant decision. He’s sure he is done for after his encounter with Beck and ready to give up. Alex reminds him he has one option left –  his father. We finally get to meet the man who casts such a large shadow over the councilman’s life. The renowned Jerome Townsend is played to the hilt by the late, great Brian Dennehy (to whom the episode is dedicated). It’s not a pleasant meeting at all for Townsend. It leaves Townsend even more defeated and who knows how that will play out.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 9 – Sing Sing Sing, airs tonight at 10/9c on SHOWTIME. It’s already available to stream on the SHOWTIME website (subscription required).
