Synopsis

As the saying goes, “rules are made to be broken.” But what if the rules are there for a reason? Several members of the team must examine the reasoning behind certain rules after consequences to questionable actions come to light. Whether the rules were broken because of love, loyalty or revenge, does the end justify the means?

This is an action packed episode, and no mistake. Relationships are tested often, and from multiple directions. Everyone has their share of hard times this episode but there are some smiles among the drama. It definitely feels like this episode is a turning point for a LOT of characters, especially Clary (Katherine McNamara). Her link with Jonathan (Luke Baines) may or may not be affecting her in more than just the physical way we’ve seen so far, and exploring that is a major part of the episode.

Are we heading for war?

It seems that the various factions of the Downworld, broken and adrift without real leadership as they are, are shaping up for all out war. Heidi (Tessa Mossey)’s machinations play out in this episode with villainous flair. None affected moreso than Maia (Alisha Wainwright) and Raphael (David Castro).

Clary and Jonathan’s bond

As I said before, their bond seems to be growing beyond just the physical pain link. There are definitely a few dark moments for Clary, but whether that’s a direct result of the bond or just how it’s playing on her mind isn’t exactly clear. I am really interested to see how it plays out over the remainder of the season. There’s a brilliant scene between Clary and Aline Penhallow (played this season by Jacky Lai) that shows some, uh, developments…shall we say.

Mr Underhill…

I know a lot of people hoped from the still for last week’s episode that there would be some interaction between Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) and Underhill (Steve Byers), which didn’t really happen. It does, however, happen this week. They have one scene together that leads to a rather tense, and then rather cute scene between Magnus and Alec (Matthew Daddario).

There ARE some cute moments this episode, including the family breakfast scene. There’s one exchange between Izzy (Emeraude Toubia) and Jace (Dominic Sherwood) that had me howling. But for the most part this episode is pretty heavy on emotion and drama. There’s a scene later in the episode between Clary and Luke (Isaiah Mustafa) that had me in tears.

Shadowhunters – To The Night Children airs on Freeform Monday March 25 at 8pm (7c). It’s then available worldwide on Netflix from March 26th.
