Review: Outlander – Crème de Menthe Season 3 Episode 7

This week’s episode Outlander – Crème de Menthe introduced us to some unique characters to say the least and we got to see a very cool and budding bromance between young Ian Murray (John Bell) and Fergus (César Domboy).

This week Claire (Caitriona Balfe) was coming off her high from being reunited with Jamie (Sam Heughan) only to be getting attacked her room. This scene was important or was leading up the importance of going back to Lallybroch, but it so reminded me of when Claire came through the stones the first time and encountered Blackjack Randall the first time. The first time around Claire was very much a damsel in distress, this time, our Sassenach had her to wits to grab the knife on the table.

After fending off her attacker, modern day Dr. Randall immediately came to the forefront to save the man. I mean she did take a oath. To say this action confused Jamie and the others is putting it mildly, but of course Jamie allowed Claire to do what she saw fit. Leaving Claire to go fetch some herbs and necessities, she runs into a potential new patient, Archibald Campbell (Mark Hadfield) who is looking for a doctor for his sister Margaret (Alison Pargeter).

Mr. Willoughby (Gary Young) is by Claire’s side as she tries to save the attacker to no avail.

Boys Will Be Boys

While Claire is playing doctor, Jamie, Fergus and the crew are scrambling to get rid of the casks of booze being stored in Madame Jeanne’s (Cyrielle Debreuil) basement.

The boys Fergus and young Ian, were brilliant in working together, duping and negotiating deals to sell the illegal goods. These two young men were hands down the scene stealers for this episode. They sold the goods, even convinced the men to give them help in moving the goods before going to the pub for a wee dram of ale.

Outlander - Crème de MentheThe boys bond of the lust Ian has for one of the local lassies working at the pub. Watching Fergus explain about losing his virginity at 15 in a ménage à trois (Vive la France!) was awkward and hilarious. No matter if it was the correct advice or not, it worked, Ian talked to the girl and even got her back to “his place.”

A Reunion 20 Years In The Making

We know how well our couple can juggle things and well, they were put to the test yet again. As things were beginning to settle, the body moved, Jamie has a visitor. Family is great, but the timing often sucks. This was held true when Ian Murray (Steven Cree) came to Edinburgh looking for his son Young Ian.

Just as the words came out of his mouth to Jamie, Ian’s face went ashen white as he saw a ghost, or what he thought was a ghost, Claire. This was very much a, “Lucy you have some splaining to do'” moment. You’d think Claire would be used to explaining her absence and resurgence, but it was still as awkward as hell. Outlander - Crème de Menthe

Once again Claire told a half truth about where she was and so on. Hey, she can’t tell the world she is from 200 years in the future.

Ian was blatantly lied to by Jamie about not seeing young Ian. Poor Ian looked horrible. I don’t mean just the aging, I mean his son is missing and has run off to his uncle before. Claire looked horrified that Jamie was lying to his brother-in-law. Which you know would lead to a fight between the couple and it did. Claire accused Jamie of being insensitive of a parent not knowing where their child was.

But I digress, the big news was the slight interaction between Ian and Jamie. Ian was curious to know how Claire was taking the news back at Lallybroch. Jamie played it off, and said we can deal with it later.

Paging Doctor Randall

Outlander - Crème de MentheClaire needing and wanting to feel more like herself, took on a patient. She went to the Inn were Archibald Campbell and his sister Margaret were staying. You instantly saw and knew something was off with her. She was in a trance and then went on to babble in tongues at Claire. But not to fret, her brother was willing to translate it for a price.

Claire wrote down a prescription and how to guide for taking care of the troubled girl. Archibald was not happy with the notes as they would be traveling and she needed to be knocked out, as not to disrupt the others on the voyage.

I don’t think we have seen the last of this brother sister duo, do you?

The Truth Will Come Out

Young Ian brought back the young lady of his desires back to the print shop to be alone. Completely into the moment after all it’s his first time, doesn’t hear the rummaging around the shop, but the girl does.  Ian sends her on her way, and goes to investigate.

Of course it’s someone sent by Sir Percival to look for the casks. No casks were found of course, it’s a print shop, but he did find the papers Jamie prints against the crown. Ian is no match for the one eyed man and with all the thrashing and pushing around, a fire breaks out.

Outlander - Crème de MentheClaire and Jamie’s fight is put on hold once they get word of the printshop fire. Jamie knows his nephew sleeps there, so he naturally goes in to look for the lad.

Ian was knocked out, but Jamie got to him and got to safety. Ian told Jamie about the pamphlets and the one-eyed man and after a bit of a talk with Claire, they decide to to home, to Lallybroch.

Things That Make You Go Hmmm

  • Ned Gowan’s (Bill Paterson) name being said again and again. This just makes me happy.
  • Who are the Campbell’s and what roles are they going to play
  • What secrets are being held from Claire
  • Will Ian tell Jenny (Laura Donnelly) that Claire is back
  • What will happen with Sir Percival Turner (Paul Brightwell)
