Recap: Legends of Tomorrow Episode 4X12: “The Eggplant, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”

Legends of Tomorrow - The Eggplant, The Witch & The Wardrobe

Where’s Ava?

  • The Legends must team up to save Ava from Purgatory and Zari from sending an emoji filled text..
  • Nate and Ray set out to undo Hank’s theme park plans. Mostly.
  • Spoilers!

Ava

Sara(Caity Lotz)wants to reconcile with Ava(Jes Macallan), but she won’t answer the door to their apartment. It’s a good thing Sara thinks on her feet: there are signs of a struggle, and Ava is gone. Bringing in Constantine(Matt Ryan) and Nora(Courtney Ford[Guess what? She didn’t kill Hank!]), Nora senses where she is. Neron/Desmond(Christian Keyes) has her. And Ava’s soul is in Purgatory, so Sara doesn’t take no for an answer-she’s going to get her Ava back!

Gary(Adam Tsekhman) blames himself, because, hey, Gary. He fusses over Ava’s body, even using aromatherapy around her.

Back on the Waverider, John sends Sara’s soul to Ava in Purgatory. Purgatory to Ava is an Ikea type store, but no cafeteria. They have trials to face, and they don’t have long. PurGarytory(Ava has unresolved Gary issues)tells them Tabitha is coming, and when she gets here…

Ray and Nate and the Amusement Park

Ray(Brandon Routh) and Nate(Nick Zano) must find and close down the theme park Hank had started. They find it, and again, there are some great heart to hearts between the two friends. There was gonna be unicorn jousting, too.

Finding Neron

Charlie(Maisie Richardson-Sellers) fools a “Pop Goes the Weasel” whistling Neron by transforming into Ava long enough for John and Nora to trap him and get him back to the Waverider.

Nate confronts him(having locked everyone out), and Ray stops him just in time from getting too close.

Once on board, Neron’s influence is felt. He has been getting into Nora’s head, and she and John squabble. She goes in to see the trapped Neron, and he promises her that if she becomes a vessel, he will bring her father back. He mentions needing a vessel for Tabitha.

But Neron isn’t the only deceiver! Nora and John(ever the conman) had set him up. Sadly, Ray stumbles in at the last second, leaving Nora to face Neron alone. She vanquishes him, freeing Desmond, but at what cost? Nora is comatose, and nothing they do will revive her.

Emojis, Bulges, Or Just Asking

Zari wants to ask Nate out. Mona says emojis are the way to go, suggesting a very suggestive set of emojis. Charlie wants Zari to be blunt. Mick, ever irascible, types out something including the word “bulge,” and Zari demurs. She finally just sends a text asking him out, and instantly regrets it.

meanwhile, Ava and Sara discuss their relationship in this Ikea hellstore, and reconciling their differences, insecurity, and distrust frees them.

Nate Stops a Wrecking Ball(Sorry Miley)

At the construction/destruction site, Nate changes his mind about destroying the park. Just as Zari sends the text, Nate must stop a wrecking ball in his metallic form, crushing his phone in the process. He never gets the text, and Zari is relieved.

Heartbreak is Hell

Desmond is freed, and John tries apologizing, but to no avail. Desmond wants nothing to do with him ever again, exiting the ship and leaving a tearful John alone.

John goes to Nora’s side to promise her he won’t abandon her again. He takes her hand and sits silently.

Neron Has A New Body

Ray is walking outside the Bureau, and as he bends to tie his shoe, begins whistling “Pop Goes the Weasel”. Well, crap, y’all.

Thoughts on episode 4X12:
  • John’s face when Gary showed up made me laugh.
  • Ava and Sara may be free from Purgatory, but John? He constantly lives in hell for all he has done(even the things he had to do for the good of everyone), and we saw it on his face when Desmond walked away. Give Matt Ryan an Emmy already.
  • ”You’d best let her alone, Squire.” “How’s she holding up, old son?” The writers are so spot on writing John!
  • We all have unresolved Gary issues, Ava. We all do.
  • Neron really thinks John is arrogant-he used that word twice.  Did it sting when he banished you? Or was that something he also picked up from Desmond’s mind?
  • Neron’s smoky form looks great! Why can’t they do that quality work with Mona’s transformations?
  • So happy to see superpowers being used this ep! But Zari is more than an inconvenient wind, Mick!
  • Loved Nora’s line:  “Vessel…what a pretty word for victim.”
  • John taking Nora’s hand feels like a callback to the superb Constantine episode “A Feast of Friends,” with one of the most heartbreaking final moments in television with John and dying, possessed friend Gary Lester(an incredible Jonjo O’Neill). They, along with Harold Perrineau(the angel Manny) deserved Emmys.
  • Man, Neron physically turns my stomach, as I have severe trypophobia.
  • Save your stuff to the cloud, Nate. It’s 2019. Usually. I mean, it is here in the here and now. Not always for you. Because of being a Legend. Of Tomorrow. Ok. Just gonna stop this recap now…
