Rangers win shootout; no wait, Penguins do

USP NHL: NEW YORK RANGERS AT PITTSBURGH PENGUINS S HKN USA PA

Brandon Sutter scores against Henrik Lundqvist (Charles Leclaire, USA TODAY Sports)

There’s a lot of debate about whether the shootout is the best way to settle ties in the NHL.

But Saturday night, there was an unusual twist after the New York Rangers left the ice with both sides thinking they had won the game.

Turns out that Dan Boyle’s deciding goal was against the rules because his initial shot hit the post, bounced off, then went off his stick into the net past Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

A replay caught the illegal double hit and the players were called back onto the ice.

Pittsburgh’s Brandon Sutter beat New York’s Henrik Lundqvist on the first shot after resumption of play, and Fleury made an impressive glove save to thwart Rick Nash.

The Penguins walked off the ice with the extra point.

I am biased being a Pens fan that this was arguably one of the best games I have seen, but damn to be in the locker room and to catch that double move by Boyle, was epic and unheard of. Boyle barely celebrated the victory when he puck skidded past Fleury, which leads me to believe that he knew he didn’t get a legit goal. I mean to go into the locker room and call both teams back out! Wow.. This game will go down in history.. Well at least in Pens fans books.
