This episode of Preacher slows down, but doesn’t stop
- Slow burns and twists and turns
The frenetic nature of the first few episodes of Preacher take a backseat to the slow reveal of who Viktor is, and what is happening to Eugene(Ian Colletti) in hell.
Where’s Tulip?
Jesse(Dominic Cooper) finds Danny’s house and Cassidy(Joseph Gilgun), yet seems unconcerned that Tulip(Ruth Negga) is not present. This bothers Cassidy, whose love of Tulip is front and center here. It is Cassidy that is trying to reach Tulip via cell phone. Jesse knows Tulip, though. She can take care of herself.
Heil in Hell
Eugene is in hell. Literally. But you knew that. What you may not know is that it is not very fiery, has wardens, prison cells, and has a sub basement. Yet somehow, Hitler is a good guy. In hell, y’all. He gives Eugene pointers, and even saves him from a fight.
Hell needs a really good maintenance man, though. There are snafus, and the matron comments on how innocent Eugene is, and that he needs to be not innocent.
Finding God-Or a Reasonable Facsimile
Once again, television helps in the search for God. The God that showed up in Jesse’s church in season one is in an infomercial. Cassidy and Jesse find his agent, and pose as casting directors from Game of Thrones.
You read that right.
They get the actor’s audition tape, and it quickly becomes a snuff film of sorts.
It will make sense.
Tulip
We finally find Tulip, at Viktor’s palatial home. She is not bound, and actually seems to know everyone there in a friendly manner. She wanders freely about the house, being ignored by everyone, or spit on her in one case.
But is Tulip in danger?
Jesse still seems unconcerned, Cassidy still is trying to contact her.
Cassidy Finally Spills the Beans
Exasperated, Cassidy finally tells Jesse that, yes, Tulip might be in trouble. Then we see Jesse in action. He steamrolls his way to Viktor’s using The Word with abandon to get himself to Tulip’s side.
And Tulip finally reveals who Viktor is.
Eugene Toughens Up
We see Eugene in hell, being picked on yet again. But he gets in with a bad crowd, and we see the moment sweet Eugene is replaced by the cold Eugene. Holy crap.
The Saint Of Killers
We see his return, able to track Jesse with ease as he uses The Word indiscriminately to rescue Tulip.
Thoughts
Did anyone else notice the Adelai Niska from Firefly vibe with Pat the torturer at Viktor’s mansion?
The moment that sticks with me the most is the moment Eugene loses his innocence. Ian Colletti’s ability to emote so well behind the prosthetics is amazing. So much so that I forget that he has to act through it and he does so without being camp.
Cassidy is pretty darn good as an agent. And considering most in Hollywood call agents blood sucking jerks, draw your own conclusions about what went on in the writer’s room for this episode.
The Tulip reveal is something that many were theorizing, but her walking around the mansion is a great way of setting up exposition.
I liked that this episode was slower. The pace was perfect for the stories told.
Cassidy is such a mother hen. Yes, he is in love with Tulip, but still…
Jesse fighting was epic. I may have squealed.
Frankie Muniz, never change. His cameo is hilarious, as is the intentionally generic “don’t forget” commercial.
