Preacher – Damsels

Preacher Damsels

Preacher – Damsels Season 2, Episode 3

  • New Orleans and serious taco discussions, as well as a Tulip in trouble.
  • Hell is repeating the same thing over and over again.
  • Some spoilers ahead!

The road trip to New Orleans has an in depth discussion of tacos, because there are good tacos everywhere, dammit, not just Mexico. So, Tulip(Ruth Negga) hypothesizes, there must be good jazz everywhere, too, and not just New Orleans. She tries to persuade Preacher Jesse(Dominic Cooper) to go to Mexico, but no go.

Cassidy(Joseph Gilgun) agrees, sort of. Mostly he now just wants some tacos.

The trio arrive in New Orleans, looking for God. Jesse makes it a point to/makes the mistake of actually asking around for God. Please, God, don’t ask for God. Because God is dog spelled backwards, I guess(anybody have a better theory?) it results in a really awkward meeting with a dog furry in a basement.

I do mean awkward.

Eugene, where ya been?

We see, over and over, what really happened the day that Eugene Root(Ian Colletti) became Arseface. He was part of the worst friendzoning ever with the horrible Tracy Loach(Gianna LaPera). She chooses suicide over Eugene. This must be what he remembers in hell, alone in a large cell. Until Hitler(Noah Taylor). Yep. That Hitler.

Did Hitler(Noah Taylor)originally look like Jeff Foxworthy?

A Preacher In New Orleans

Back on the street, Tulip excuses herself from the group, saying her stomach hurts. Cassidy chases after her, saying he has a place for them to stay. It belongs to his old friend Dennis(Ronald Guttman).

He lets them in, but I have a feeling he doesn’t care much for Cassidy. Sans Jesse, the duo run into an old friend of Tulip’s, and she seems worried by it. Tulip has a secret, but she won’t tell anyone. That secret, in part at least, is Victor.

The Laundromat

Victor’s thugs catch up to Tulip, alone in a laundromat. She was expecting them, and coolly keeps putting quarters in the machine.

Lara Featherstone

Alone and in a smoky bar, Jesse encounters singer Lara Featherstone(Julie Ann Emery). He had been tipped off by a bartender that she could help him find God. She tells him he is mistaken, but to follow her outside after she creates a scene.

Lara is nearly abducted, but Jesse uses the Word(thinking it is safe after last week’s episode), and saves her. He uses the voice on a seductive Lara, proving to her the power of the Word.

She is not who Jesse thinks she may be; she works for Herr Starr(Pip Torrens), and we see her removing her wig and reporting to him that Jesse is the real deal.

Thoughts

I loved the title of this episode-“Damsels”; this episode is a tale of three women. Notice it does not mention any of them being  the stereotypical “in distress” types.

Eugene’s back story is as heartbreaking as all get out(To those that didn’t read the Preacher Vertigo series, it is very different from the comic). When he is trying to sweep Tracy’s brains back into her head, I alternated wanting to cry and actually laughing out loud at the things he was saying.

Next week we will find what Tulip found so horrible that she had to keep it a secret from Jesse and Cassidy; but with this show, it may be something funny. That’s why we watch Preacher, y’know..

Julie Ann Emery was fantastic as the Grail spy Featherstone. Part Jessica Rabbit, part Dr. Chase Meridian, part Lynn Bracken, mostly Mata Hari, all Grail.

Two words: Herr Starr.
