NY film critics name ‘American Hustle’ best film

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Film Critics Circle has named David O. Russell’s American Hustle the best film of 2013.

The critics group also awarded the film best supporting actress for Jennifer Lawrence and best screenplay for the script by Russell and Eric Singer. The film is a fictionalized tale of the FBI’s late 1970s Abscam investigation.

Best actor has gone to Robert Redford for his near-wordless performance in the shipwreck drama All Is Lost. Cate Blanchett has won best actress for her leading role as a bitter, fallen socialite in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.

12 Years a Slave filmmaker Steve McQueen took best director.

The New York Film Critics Circle Awards, chosen by a body of New York-based critics, are one of the first major honors leading to the Academy Awards.
