Lionsgate films already made a controversial decision by splitting up the final installation of the Hunger Games into two separate movies. Now they’re planning another move that could have fans pulling their hair out. A Hunger Games prequel or sequel could be on the way after Mockingjay: Part 2 has its run in theaters.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told analysts that he’s “actively looking at some development and thinking about prequel and sequel possibilities” for the Hunger Games franchise, though no other concrete details were shared. It’s very possible Feltheimer threw that nugget to investors in an attempt to gauge market response. But, I mean, of course folks would want more movies from The Hunger Games universe.
According to Venture Capital Post, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer is considering the idea of continuing the Hunger Games franchise even though the original stories by Suzanne Collins end with Mockingjay. Feltheimer is reportedly only planning the prequel in response to a massive amount of Hunger Games fans who want the universe to continue on in the movie realm, if not in book form.
But many fans who stick by Collins’ original story could be furious at the prospect of drawing out the story even longer than a two-part finale. What could infuriate fans even more is the fact that Lionsgate may change the plot in the final Hunger Games film to open up possibilities for future movies. The plan is to add new romantic scenes between Katniss and Gale that didn’t exist in the Hunger Games novels. Even though fans are very aware that the series ends with Katniss and Peeta getting together, adding new levels to the relationship between Katniss and Gale could generate more interest in the characters’ romance, which could be explored in a prequel.
According to Deadline, it’s also possible that Lionsgate will create a sequel to the four movies and continue the story beyond Suzanne Collins’ novels. This would mean that altering the plot of Mockingjay: Part 2 would be even more beneficial to the possibility of future Hunger Games films.
The CEO also revealed that Lionsgate is discussing the possibility of Hunger Games theme parks or special attractions.
The new trailer for Mockingjay: Part 2 is set to be shown before Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the film itself is slated to hit theaters November 20 this year. But before that date, the filmmakers have reported that there is still work to do. Director Francis Lawrence explained that some aspects of the movie still need to be tweaked and a few “real” scenes still need to be shot, whatever that means. Fans will have to wonder if Lawrence is making any last minute changes to the Hunger Games storyline to leave a gap open for sequels and prequels.
