Matt Smith swaps Doctor Who for American Psycho

Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith will play Patrick Bateman in a musical version of Brett Easton Ellis’s American Psycho

Matt Smith has been cast as malevolent banker Patrick Bateman for the forthcoming stage musical of American Psycho.
Smith, who will appear as Doctor Who’s titular character for the final time in this year’s Christmas special, today started rehearsals for his new theatre role.
Brett Easton Ellis’s dark, disturbing 1991 novel American Psycho was made into a film of the same name in 2001, with Christian Bale starring as Bateman alongside Reese Witherspoon and Willem Dafoe.
The American Psycho musical will preview at the Almeida Theatre in London from December 3. Ellis’s novel has been adapted for the stage by Roberto Aguirre Sacasa (Glee), while Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) has written songs for the musical, which will be directed by the Almeida’s Artistic Director Rupert Goold.
Matt Smith was a relatively unknown actor when he was selected in January 2009 to be the 11th Doctor Who. Since then, however, he hasbecome a household name on British television, starring in 44 episodes of the BBC programme. Before taking the role, Smith had appeared in theatre productions of The History Boys and Murder in the Cathedral.
