The Supernatural Battle

The supernatural battle for Los Angeles really was at the forefront of this episode in a number of ways. Up to now it’s been so subtle that I’ve sometimes wondered how this could be a Penny Dreadful show. It’s easy to forget that the major players on the “bad” side – Townsend, Goss, Mateo, Fly Rico, Craft – are all being manipulated by incarnations of Magda. They have their own motivations, but she is the one stoking the fires.

The one unknown at this time, at least as far as I can see, is Miss Adelaide. I do believe though, at least after the end of this episode, that her involvement is about to become much clearer. There’s got to be more to the “Temple” than meets the eye, given the connection to Haslitt I just can’t figure out what yet. This concerns me as I truly do hope that Molly and Tiago can find a way through this together, but I have a feeling that there are soon going to be revelations that pull them apart.

There was an interesting moment with Goss and Kurt (Dominic Sherwood) towards the end of the episode that makes me almost certain there is more to Kurt than we are aware of.

Genuinely Creepy

I want to give a special shout out again this week to the young performers, especially Santino Barnard and Julian Hilliard. Tom and Frank’s scenes together sent shivers down my spine. They are truly creepy.

I’m also keen to see what happens next with Maria. She goes through a hell of a lot in this episode between work and home. Her interactions with Elsa were chilling, those with Josefina and Raul heartbreaking, and the final scene with Maria in her shrine was absolutely enthralling. I couldn’t look away. I have a feeling the old coyote is about to show her teeth. She’s had enough of Magda interfering with her family.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 1.07 Maria and the Beast airs Sunday June 7th at 10/9c on SHOWTIME. It’s available to stream now on the SHOWTIME website.
