The second trailer for Jon M. Chu’s upcoming live-action Jem and the Holograms movie, based on the animated ’80s television series, has debuted online and given more hints about the film’s approach to making over the beloved show.
In a contemporary twist, the movie’s heroine, Jerrica Benton (Aubrey Peeples) finds herself catapulted to international pop superstardom via YouTube. Add some glittery makeup and a bubblegum-pink wig, and voilà: she’s transformed into our new Jem of the 2010s.
The first trailer revealed as much but gave no indication of some of the cartoon’s best elements. We were left wondering where or if Synergy was going to be in the movie. Fear not JEM fans, the new shows us Synergy, a machine of Jerrica’s father’s invention that was a holographic computer in the series and resembles a robot in the new trailer. Hey a robot version of Synergy is better than them hacking up our cartoon and not having it in there.
