We knew we had to have a sequel, and we know when Summit/Lionsgate is involved, sequels are inevitable, but we got confirmation. It’s official, ‘Insurgent’  got green lighted!

Hours after the big-screen adaptation of the hit book opened with an impressive $4.9 million at late-night Thursday screenings, Lionsgate announced that it is moving forward with a second movie: Insurgent.

It will begin shooting in May, with a projected March 20, 2015, release date.

A third installment called Allegiant is slated for March 2016.

“We’re off to a great start with strong numbers from all regions of the country, urban, suburban and rural alike,” said CEO Jon Feltheimer on Friday. “We’re confident that Divergent is on its way to becoming another important franchise for us, and we have just greenlit the second film, Insurgent.”

The dystopian adventure starring Shailene Woodley is expected to earn $60 million or more in its opening weekend.
