Game of Thrones Recap: ‘High Sparrow’

Season 5 has certainly taken off at full speed. In episode 3 of Game of Thrones, we see a wedding where no one died, a beheading that actually needed to happen, an unfortunate kidnapping, and a shocking engagement.

The one character that should be feared the most is not Cersei, not the dragons, not even what’s left of The Mountain (yes, I think some version of him was under that sheet when Cersei paid a brief visit to Qyburn, the scientist), but actually Littlefinger. He is the greatest player of the game. Littlefinger, who has creepily taken Sansa under his wing delivers her to the family that was responsible for the death of her mother and brother. So we finally discover his intentions are for her to marry the sadistic, once bastard son of Lord Bolton. Last week, Brienne and Podrick finally find Sansa, but she rudely declined their offer for protection. Bet you she’s kicking herself for that decision.

The one good thing is this arrangement brings Sansa back to Winterfell, her beloved home. The down side is that it comes with this guy:

RamsayIt’ll be interesting to see where this goes and how it all plays out for her and her psychotic betroth.

Speaking of weddings, back at Kings Landing, Tommen (Cersei’s youngest) marries Margaery. Despite a bit of age difference, the marriage must be consummated, and Queen Margaery uses her assets to her advantage. With sweetness in her voice, she asks Tommen if his mother might be happier elsewhere. Her charm worked quickly, as Tommen questions his mother’s happiness, and that maybe she should return to Casterly Rock. I think Cersei has met her match and knows it, so what does she do, she starts planning  to rearrange the center of power in King’s Landing. In doing so, Cersei reaches out to the  “High Sparrow,” and a plan is set in motion to make him the head of religion in the seven kingdoms. As a gesture of good faith to the High Sparrow, Cersei locks up the High Septon of Westeros after he comes to her looking for help with his embarrassing encounter with the High Sparrows. Maybe the High Septon should have thought twice before having some fun at Littlefinger’s brothel.

In the last episode, Jon was made head of the Night’s watch. Jon falls into his role perfectly, handing out commands to the others. In a very smart move, Jon’s decides to split up Thorne and Janos Slynt, the two he has the most problems with and would like nothing more than to see him dead. He orders Janos to repair castle Greygard. Janos refuses repeatedly. He shows nothing but disrespect for Jon’s command and leadership, so its off with his head. A rightful decision. In the distance we see Stannis watching, and clearly approving. He sees a strong leader in Jon.

Over is Essos, Tryion is desperate for a change of scenery. What better place to take in the sights, then a brothel. Vary’s trying desperately to keep track of Tyrion, loses him for a brief second and leave it to Tyrion to find trouble. Actually, trouble found him, as he’s peeing off the edge of the building, he is kidnapped, by Jorah Mormont. We haven’t seen Jorah since Dani banished him for being a spy. Looks like Tyrion may meet the Mother of Dragons sooner than he thinks. Again, nothing good comes out of a brothel.
