Cruella de Vil film in the works at Disney

Will the 101 Dalmatians villain finally manage to craft the coat she so desires?

101 Dalmatians was a box office smash in 1961, and again in 1996, and now it seems Disney wants to milk one of its best-loved franchises once more for a new live-action film focusing on the fur-loving Cruella de Vil.

As the movie heads into pre-production, it’s unknown whether the villain – played by Glenn Close in the 1996 adaptation of Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel and its poorly reviewed 2002 sequel 102 Dalmatians – has finally managed to turn Pongo and Perdita’s considerable brood into a luxurious winter garment.

Close has been hired as an executive producer on Cruella, which will be penned by Aline Brosh McKenna, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

McKenna previously adapted The Devil Wears Prada for the screen, and was hired by Disney for writing duties on Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming live-action Cinderella.

Disney will be hoping that Cruella yields similar results to 1996’s Dalmatians movie. That film was the sixth biggest movie in that year’s worldwide box office rankings.

The film is the latest live-action adaptation of an animated classic from the Disney stable.

Following the success of 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, which grossed more than one billion dollars, the studio has commissioned a new version of Cinderella, and a live-action update of Sleeping Beauty focusing on Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent.
