Cobra Kai Season 3 Roundtable
If you’re anything like us, your New Year’s Day was spent on your couch yelling things like “get him a body bag Johnny” (wait… was that just me?) as you binged Cobra Kai Season 3.
Clare, PurpleBrina and Sophie are all up to date and decided to break down some of the key moments from this season.
What was your favourite moment in Season 3?
PB – I would say it was seeing Ali (Elisabeth Shue) again. I loved her in the original movies. So it was awesome to see her again. Really loved seeing Daniel (Ralph Macchio) go back to Okinawa and he gets to see the little girl he saved all grown up. Then she saved him. It was a very full circle moment.
C – I actually really enjoyed the “double date” at the Christmas Party. Watching Ali and Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) dismantle allllll of Johnny (William Zabka) and Daniel’s bravado and blustering was glorious. The stunning Tamlyn Tomita coming back when Daniel went to Okinawa was pretty amazing too.
S – The Christmas party for the same reasons Clare has mentioned. I love Amanda, she is by far my favourite character. I don’t know how Larusso managed to get such an awesome wife but I’m kinda proud of him.
C – OH! And the montage-esque stuff with Johnny helping Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) to walk again was fricking priceless. I adore Johnny (like, a lot) and I love the relationship between those two.
S – Everyone loves a good montage!! Or the concert Johnny took Miguel to!
C – Gotta love Dee Snyder! I may have been up off the couch moshing along to “I Wanna Rock!”.
PB – Johnny and Daniel have the best love hate bromance ever. And yes C, Dee Snyder is the man of Classic 80s rock. Yikes did I just call the 80s classic…..I am old.
Least fave?
S – Stealing the snake from the zoo, I mean that takes a special kind of stupid. One bite from a cobra can kill you. And Robby (Tanner Buchanan) just grabbing it!
PB – I honestly hated the big fight scene in the house. It was very unrealistic to me. It bugged me that all this is happening and NO ONE CALLED THE COPS!! They all have cellphones and yet no one called. I don’t know why but this really pissed me off.
C – Poor Demetri (Gianni DeCenzo) getting his arm broken! Although that did lead to the epic “I love your big dick” cast signing that had me howling.
Who was screaming “don’t you DARE kiss her” when Johnny was on the date with Ali?
C – ME! Oh my god I was so worried he was going to go and screw up what he’s got with Carmen (Vanessa Rubio). I think the sigh of relief I let out when that didn’t happen could have powered a wind turbine!
PB – I was like, “Oh he better not do that” I was happy when he didn’t do it.
S – If you weren’t screaming this were you even watching?
What did you think of Hawk (Jacob Bertrand)’s “redemption”?
PB – It was about time. He seemed to be a good kid at heart. He needed to grow and I think he finally did. It was much needed.
S – I loved it, Hawk is one of my favourite characters. Yes he may have gone a bit too far but there are moments throughout the season where you can see his inner conflict over what to do. He was a victim of bullying, something no one should ever have to go through. Cobra Kai gave him the ability and confidence to defend himself and that kinda turned him into the bully, Kreese filling his head with all kinds of bad certainly didn’t help. I was bouncing in my seat when he came to Demetri’s defence, maybe shouting a bit loud too. I do have to say when Kreese was introducing new students to Cobra Kai and Hawk went up against Brucks (Bo Mitchell), this wasn’t really a fight more Hawk just beating someone up, but when Hawk took his top off to show his tattoo I did appreciate the hawk sound that went along with it.
C – I thought it came a little late. I would have preferred it to happen before he led an all out attack on the Larusso’s house. Hell I would have preferred he didn’t break Dimitri’s arm… but I am glad he has finally seen the light.
Speaking of the attack on the Larusso house, let’s talk about Sam (Mary Mouser) and Tory (Peyton List). All this over a boy?
S – OMG right?! Tory needs a slap, she is the one that started all of this. I’m not saying Sam is innocent in any of this but Sam didn’t start the fight that got Miguel kicked off a 2nd floor balcony! Tory is full on deranged and how she hasn’t been sent back to juvie is beyond me. Surely the attack on Larusso’s house would be enough to get the police involved.
PB – I kinda hate Tory. She has some serious misplaced anger. I really feel she has something else going on and instead of dealing with her personal issues she is focusing on Sam. And poor Sam, she needs some serious therapy after all this. She is trying to be the better person but Tory is too damaged. No boy/man is worth all this trouble.
C – Yeah, neither girl is particularly flushed with glory. I did feel for Sam this season, more so than I have in the past, because the fight at the school obviously left her in a bad way. But honestly I feel like after the thing at the laser tag place when she had a panic attack she should have gone to her mom and/or the police.
Tory needs locking up. She’s a savage with no apparent moral compass and that’s going to get so much worse now that Robby has joined Cobra Kai!
Do you think the Vietnam flashbacks were intended to make Kreese (Martin Kove) a sympathetic character? If so, do you think it worked?
S – I think this was more to show why Kreese is the way he is. He certainly didn’t get any sympathy from me. Explains where he got the cobra idea from.
PB – I think they were trying to make you feel sorry for him but all it did for me was make me hate him more. He could have changed but he chose not to change. Yeah, I still don’t like him haha
C – I think maybe that’s what they were trying to do but it sure as hell didn’t work on me. It just made him out to be a total psychopath now, especially given that phone call he made at the end.
So Robby not only chose Kreese over his Dad and Daniel, but he also spent the entire season pouting like a child that just had his toy taken away. What are your thoughts on Robby this season?
C – Same as it’s been the previous two, he needs a fricking reality check and to stop being such a whiny baby. His dad is truly trying to make something of himself and to make amends and Robby keeps stomping his foot and throwing everything back at Johnny. Brat.
PB – Robby is like Tory. They have some serious personal issues that need to be deal with. And Johnny needs to man up and be a father. He is Robby’s father and he could take control of Robby. I feel like that is what Robby needs. He needs a strong father figure or maybe he needs a mother’s love. But Kreese doesn’t care about him. Kreese is just using him to make a point.
S – Such a whiny baby! Change the record Robby, your Dad actually wants to help you and be in your life and you keep throwing it back in his face! Could you be anymore jealous of Miguel?! The difference there Robby dear is that Miguel wanted Johnny’s help and accepts him even though he isn’t perfect.
Speaking of teaming up, Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang(?! I laughed.. A lot) Karate teaming up to go up against Cobra Kai promises to be exciting. We have a clear definition of good guys and bad guys, what are your predictions or hopes for season 4?
C – Is Daniel gonna teach everyone else the numb-y arm and leg thing? Cos that would have been REALLY FREAKING USEFUL TO YOUR DAUGHTER… Ahem, I think it’s going to be pretty interesting now, cos Cobra Kai are just full of bullies, psychos and kids with zero impulse control, while Miyagi-Eagle-Do-Fang seem to be getting a handle on their shit.
I do want to see Robby and Johnny sort their shit out, but I doubt that will happen. I also really want Johnny and Carmen to be happy, they deserve it!
PB – I kinda knew that it was heading that way. I felt the whole point of this series was for them to come together and become stronger mentally and physically. Johnny and Daniel will be the best of friends in the end.
S – It did make me feel all warm and fuzzy at the end when they all walked into Miyagi-Do. I think that warm fuzzy feeling will grow a little then get stomped out completely. I really want Johnny and Robby to actually have a relationship, same as C though Johnny and Carmen forever!!!
