Welcome to the world of simian secret agents. Welcome to Bubbles O’Seven.
I picked up Bubbles O’Seven in Dr O, at ICE Con earlier this year, along with Bounce Comics‘ excellent Apes N Capes. Yeah, there’s a certain theme running here, but it works.
Bubbles O’Seven is everything you would expect from a secret agent who just happens to be a bonobo chimpanzee. Stuffed to the brim with secret agent standards but all given a decidedly furry spin, Bubbles is a really fun read. The first of Bubbles’ (hopefully) many adventures sees him take on a maniacal Orangutan in an adventure that sets up a very fun world. You see SpIWIT is the lisp-inducing acronym for Species Intelligence Weapons Integrated Taskforce, an elite group of animals enlisted in the resurgence of an abandoned MI7 project; animals possessing certain characteristics wherein said traits are enhanced and loyalty ensured by certain subtle but coercive means. In simple terms, tinkering with nature produces a couple of very cool secret agents and some rather nasty bad guys from some otherwise affable animals.
Written by Grainne McEntee with art from Matt Rooke what you get is a romp featuring a pipe smoking, suit wearing bonobo channelling the very best of early era Bond (the girls, the gadgets). The script is excellent, from the ape-themed Bond-esque dialogue to the small mentions here and there that are picked up later in the issue it’s a solid story. Bonus material includes some great pin up work, character sketches for some of the main players and, most importantly, Bubbles’ own recipe for his delectable Leaf Green Smoothie.
I highly recommend picking up the first issue if you happen to see the Bounce Comics crew at any conventions, I do believe they are attending both MCM London Comic Con this weekend and Thought Bubble in November.
I reached the end of Dr O and was delighted to see, on the back cover, the wonderful poster for the next instalment!
Yep, that’s right…Bubbles is returning and is currently seeking funding for issue 2 via a kickstarter.
