Clare’s Comics Catalogue – Brethren Born

Brethren Born 3: Deceptions Kickstarter

Hey there guys and gals, welcome back to my comic corner. Today I want to talk to you about a comic series that’s very important to me – Brethren Born. This comic is the one that introduced me to the small press comics scene. I’ve been a passionate supporter since late 2015. I’ve written about this one before, in my first comics post, but as of yesterday the kickstarter for Issue 3 is live so let’s dive in.

Brethren Born is a super-powered revenge story, packed to the seams with action and intrigue. Events take place over 3 timelines, converging in the present. The mysterious Newton is the star of the story. As a child he was experimented on and as a result has powers that allow him to manipulate gravity. It’s pretty cool to see him tossing people around like toys, or floating cars (while he is in them). He wants revenge on the people behind the program that created him, and the death of his brothers and only friend.

Issue 3, subtitled Deceptions, looks to be expanding the world that writer Jon Laight has created. The art team (Phil Knibbs, Luca Cicchitti, Santiago Ramos and Rob Jones) is back once more, with British artist Amrit Birdie on cover duty this time. Take a look at the kickstarter page for the project for examples of their work on previous issues and some sneaky peeks at pages from issue 3.

Now, on to the kickstarter. I’m sorry I couldn’t post this yesterday due to issues with the site. Unfortunately that means that most of the one-off exclusive rewards are already gone. There are still some available, including the amazing chance to have Phil Knibbs draw you as either Newton or one of the main bad guys in the comic.

For those who haven’t read any of the series so far, there are several catch up options included.

Backers who join the project before Midnight on Sunday 5th of March will also be entitled to the early bird backer bonus. This digital bundle contains comics and art from creators including Dan Butcher, Vince Hunt, Jay Martin, Chris Sides, Rob Jones, Darrell Thorpe, Ken Reynolds and a story from the Comichaus Anthology. Most of these creators have contributed pin-ups to the project as well.

Amazingly, the BB#3 Kickstarter achieved its funding goal within 6 hours of launch yesterday. It’s now in to stretch goal territory with the first (an exclusive Andy Bloor pinup) already having been announced. Jon has plenty more up his sleeve so do get on board!

The Brethren Born 3: Deceptions kickstarter runs until April 2nd. Don’t forget though, early bird backers get all those digital extras so don’t miss out on your chance!

Hey, I'm Clare, aka Ciara or C. My current fandoms are RWBY and The Last Kingdom along with a bunch of other stuff I tend to let build up and then binge! I'm a keen, albeit amateur, cosplayer and love attending cons in various cosplays. I'm also the resident comic book girl around these parts, especially small press comics, so if you've got an indie book you want reviewed, I'm your gal! When I'm not doing the fangirl thing I am a keen long-distance hiker, having completed Te Araroa in New Zealand and The Pacific Crest Trail on the West Coast of the US.
