The Challenges of Building a Dalek: Part 20
Be sure to read the previous parts of The Challenges of Building a Dalek. Since the last update, we have been making repairs. It took about a week for the wood to dry out from the water damage that was made by Hurricane Nicole. We are also battling very high humidity which is causing the wood to take longer to dry.
Most of the damage we have been able to repair. It is the damage in the front two panels that are taking the longest and is becoming the most difficult. The location of the water damage is making it somewhat difficult to repair as we are trying to figure out what’s the best way to repair it. As it looks like we may have to redo the whole section but that is the worst-case scenario. We won’t fully know until the wood fully dries out.
The Neck Section
As we have been waiting for the wood to dry out, we have been making improvements to the neck section. When we last spoke to the Dalek Builders, they suggested that we use some type of trellis design grid to use as the ventilation grill. We were unable to find exactly what they suggested, originally, we used metal screening around, but we were not happy with how it looked.
While dad was working on an AC unit, he found a grill work design that fit the overall look for our dalek, so after some online searching, he found a similar design and bought a roll. From there he cut it into sections and was able to slide it in over the metal screening that we had already installed. To finish off the look he used black caulk that gave it a seamless look.
Current Design
Currently, the neck is about 10 inches in height; and about 16 inches in diameter. When you add it to the base it stands at 62.5 inches, 1587.5 millimeters, including the wheels. Derek the Dalek is currently a bright hunter green and will be having soul-sucking black hemispheres around the base. Since we have now started playing with using a 3D printer, we are currently looking for the design to make the ray gun and eye socket.
