Bird Box Barcelona Review

Bird Box Barcelona is a thrilling spinoff of the popular 2018 film Bird Box, that takes viewers on a journey through the post-apocalyptic streets of Barcelona. Released on Netflix in July, Bird Box Barcelona introduces us to a new cast of characters who must navigate the city’s deserted streets while blindfolded, in order to survive the deadly presence that lurks within. Below you will find our review of Bird Box Barcelona.

After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian (Mario Casas) must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the film being covered here wouldn’t exist.

Overall Thoughts

I want to start this off by saying that I haven’t seen any advertisement for this movie, only found it as I was browsing through Netflix. The first film left me with a lot of questions that I somewhat hoped that this one would answer at least some of them. I was mistaken and instead got a lot more questions. The biggest question is are these things aliens, angels, or something else?

I spent most of the film hating Sebastian because he was luring people to the creatures. It wasn’t until the end of the movie that he decided not to kill Claire (Georgina Campbell) and Sofia (Naila Schuberth) and helped them reach the mountain. Redeeming arcs are my favorite. In the end, as the girls reached the mountaintop and found the refugee camp, we discovered more about the Seers – those who can walk without blindfolds – and the military’s blood tests for genetic markers. I would love to see them expand more on that.

The film definitely has more of a religious side, talking about saving the survivor’s souls and the beings are angels. That everyone needs to open their eyes and see. That’s not something I’m a big fan of, to be honest. Compared to the first film, this one takes a different turn. It’s a spinoff, not a sequel. I like the idea of someone being immune to the creature’s attack. As a fan of the original Bird Box, it was something new. But with the spinoff, I’m not feeling it. The religious aspect and the characters are dry and unrelatable.
