This week I take you back to 1985 and one of my Favourite John Hughes films. Here we have 5 high school students all from different circles of life, all made to do Saturday detention all day and the bad thing about it, is they are told they can’t do anything by their Principal who is in charge of them for the day. Yes that’s it The Breakfast Club!
With a cast like Emilio Estevez, Paul Gleeson, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy, you would be a nut job to miss it. These delinquents end up sharing things with each other they wouldn’t normally do, it’s closer to real life than most would think, showing you the insight into the youthful problems, just because they are the sport star, cheer queen or A+ student doesn’t mean things are all good in their lives, parent and pear pressures will sometimes make their perfect looking lives hell.
Andrew Clark, Brian Johnson, John Bender, Claire Standish and Allison Reynolds are stuck in detention for the entire day and Principal Richard Vernon makes sure they are as bored as possible, which ends up with them all opening up and bonding more than they ever would have in normal circumstances. If you haven’t seen this film yet, I highly recommend it! With songs like Don’t You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds, Waiting by Elizabeth Daily, Fire In the Twilight Wang Chung, Heart Too Hot to Hold by Jesse Johnson & Stephanie Spruill, We Are Not Alone by Karla DeVito, The Reggae by Keith Forsey, Footloose by Kenny Loggins, Didn’t I Tell You by Joyce Kennedy and accompanying music by Keith Forsey you have to get watch and feel the way it helps you see their side of things.
For a film made in 1985 the topic it shows you is still relevant, even in this day and age, parents can sometimes put pressure on their children without realising it, moulding them to the shape they want them to be and not what the children themselves want to be!
So sit back and relax and have a taste of the wonderful sounds of The Breakfast Club!
