Episode three of WGN America’s Outsiders which aired Tuesday, was laying out more plots and Farrell traditions, one including the groom trudging through a gauntlet to reach his bride. It’s an interesting little scene that doesn’t advance character but does offer more color on the Farrell way of life.

I like and am enjoying when the show offers these elements but part of me also wishes for something more concrete, some sort of Farrell 101 guide, but Outsiders seems like the kind of show that will only dole out such details in drips and drabs, relying on viewers to remember and piece it all together. Or maybe just maybe they are laying the groundwork and it will all be explained later on.

There’s more mystery surrounding deputy sheriff Wade Houghton and now his son, too. The boy appears to wander into the woods and night and then returns with injuries. What is going on there?

There are more confrontations between the mountain folks and the townies, including Asa (Joe Anderson) threatening the townies at a community meeting where Wade’s sister, a Christian environmentalist, suggests blowing up the mountain for coal is bad for the environment. So does that mean she is on the Farrell’s side, or just a good Christian? More questions than answers.

I’m torn in this episode, I am not sure if I am more interested in the townie stories or the mountain stories. Once again we see the love triangle between G’Win, Asa and Lil Foster in the lead on this weeks episode. How can Asa not realize he is playing with fire?

Episode three was a somewhat quiet episode; next week stuff finally starts to happen.
